Happy Father’s Day Arnor Gudjohnsen

By: Daryl | June 17th, 2007

Eidur and ArnorAs it’s Father’s Day, why not recount the interesting tale of Arnor Gudjohnsen and Eidur Gudjohnsen? A 25 year old Arnor apparently said his greatest wish was “to play international football alongside Eidur,” his then 8 year old son.

On April 24th 1996 a 34 year old Arnor subbed out of the Iceland vs Estonia international friendly in the 62nd minute. Replacing him was a 17 year old Eidur, making his international debut. All very nice, but not quite what Arnor had asked for, because they didn’t get to play together, though they did make history as the only father and son combination to appear in the same international fixture. And then Eidur broke his ankle in a youth tournament. It took him two years to start playing again, by which time Arnor had retired, though he’s still involved in Eidur’s career as his agent.
