Happy St. Patrick’s Day, from Eamon Dunphy
By: Daryl | March 17th, 2009
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone. I know it’s not traditional to give gifts on March 18th, but I got you one anyway.
Last year we paid tribute to classy Irish international Paul McGrath.
This year we bring you something not so classy. But possibly a lot more entertaining. The collected rantings of legendary loudmouth Eamon Dunphy.
For those unfamiliar, Dunphy was a decent professional footballer in the 60s and 70s, and played 23 times for Ireland. But he’s become much more famous – or maybe much more infamous – as a journalist/pundit, especially for his trademark angry tirades on Irish TV station RTE and elsewhere.
Here are some of my favourites…
On BBC pundits and Cristiano Ronaldo:
Calling Jose Mourinho “poisonous”:
On Terry Venables being linked with the Ireland job in November 2007. Venables later said this rant cost him the job:
His infamous on-air rant about Roy Keane’s decision to quit Man Utd. Go to 4:40 for when Dunphy gets started:
Clearly he’s not the nicest man in the world. But honest opinions are in short supply on TV these days, so – in a twisted way – we should treasure Dunphy’s venom while he’s still allowed to spit it.
