Hillsborough Disaster 20th Anniversary Documentary

By: chris | April 15th, 2009

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died due to crushing at the Hillsborough Stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final. A memorial was held at Anfield in which 30,000 people paid tribute to the deceased through song, minutes of silence, 96 red balloons being released and more.

The BBC’s Football Focus compiled a quality 50 minute documentary describing and displaying the day’s happenings – certainly not for the faint of heart – and providing remembrances from those involved, including some who survived the disaster. It’s well worth setting aside an hour or so to watch, particularly for those who are too young to remember. All seven parts below.

How could ninety-six people DIE at a football match? In a supposedly advanced western nation? My mind just can’t wrap around it.

This is an incredibly disturbing documentary, but everybody should watch it anyway.
