How to Support Espanyol From Beyond the Grave

Espanyol fanBeing a lifelong fan of a club used to be pretty much the ultimate. You go the games your whole life, even if your team keeps losing. Until your time comes and you buy the big season ticket in the sky. Because you can’t support your team once you’re dead, right?

Well you can if you support Espanyol, because the La Liga club have found a metaphysical loophole so fans can keep attending games even after their earthly expiration date. The Barcelona-based team are reserving a corner of their new Cornella-El Prat stadium (which is still under construction) to house the ashes of up to 20,000 super-dedicated supporters.

For a price of course.

A spot for your (presumably stripey blue and white) urn will likely cost about 4,000 euros. So it’s sort of like the ultimate season ticket. But I’ve got my suspicions about how this came about. I can’t help imagining an Espanyol board meeting where someone says “the trouble with our fans is that they always die, eventually” and someone else says “we can find a way around that.”

And so they did. And if you’re a serious Espanyol fan, then this might be right for you. But here’s the not so good thing: apparently your 4,000 euros only buys 15 years of afterlife attendance, after that you have to find somewhere else. So if you’re looking for a permanent home after you pass on, you’d be better off supporting Hamburg.
