Ice Soccer

ice-soccer.jpgLast week we introduced you to the exciting world of rollersoccer, the perfect sport to play in between doing the funky chicken and hokey pokey down at your local roller skating rink. We realize that some of you live in colder climes and prefer to get your exercise on ice. We are proud to introduce you to the newest addition to the world of odd soccer games: ice soccer.

The premise is simple, really. Go find eight of your closest friends, head to an ice skating rink or frozen pond, and play a game of soccer against another team if nine. Unless you are a tough guy you’ll just need to wear some pads and to use a specially designed “Boot’r” ball, but if you don’t feel like purchasing one an old tire should do. No need to wear skates or ice cleats, regular shoes work just fine. Just remember that according to the official rules there is no heading or slide tackling allowed. Frequent references to the movie Slapstick are encouraged, however.

Ice soccer has undoubtedly been played since the time when man first invented ice, but the officialâ„¢ version traces its roots to a lake in Michigan in 1987. It is hard to say how many people actually play the sport these days, but apparently it is popular in some northern universities in the United States where college kids prove that doing anything while drinking can be considered a good time.

The official Ice Soccer Web site has a video of the game in action. It kind of resembles the swarm soccer you see 5-year-olds playing. Sadly, there are no shots of blood bouncing on ice.
