If only you got Credit for Hitting the Crossbar

By: Bob | February 13th, 2007

We have a new entry in our Hall of Fame of blown goals. At this rate we’ll have to build a new building in the coming months just to properly display all the professional footballers who make something so easy look so very tough. This one comes from parts unknown – Mexico, Turkey, perhaps you know? In any event, special recognition should also be given to the keeper for his dramatic leap while missing the ball and to the rest of the players for looking like zombies until they realized it was not a goal.

Not sure the teams, but it’s from Copa Libertadores. The announcers are Argentine, though I don’t know if the teams are.

One of the teams is from Ecuador. At the end of the clip, the commentator mentions a stadium in Guayaquil, so one of them is probably Barcelona, the only major Ecuadorian club in that city.

Actually, there are two major clubs in Guayaquil. Besides Barcelona, there is also Emelec, which wears blue as does one of the teams in the video.

But that doesn’t look like the Estadio George Capwell to me. I could be wrong. This will take some sleuthing. I’ll put the boys and girls over at Ecuador World Cup Blog onto this one.

It sounds like one of the teams is Libertad, from Paraguay.

Yep, it is Emelec, playing Libertad of Paraguay in the 2002 Copa Libertadores.

    (Thanks E4L!)

It was a Libertad player that missed that shocking opportunity… and it was against Emelec because I know them colours (blue and white strip) and the Capwell stadium is near my nans in Guayaquil.

It was actually 2003, and Libertad won that game 5-1, and it was the Modelo stadium (the announcer says so clearly).
