If you do the crime while doing the time you must do the time

One team I will be keeping an eye on during the English League One season is Oldham Athletic. The club has made headlines by signing former West Brom striker Lee Hughes, a player who has spent the past three years in prison because he was involved in a drunk driving accident that killed a man.
Signing a player who left the scene of an accident in which he killed another person is a controversial decision. Oldham are either giving a man a shot at redemption or they are desperately employing a bad character depending on your perspective. Either way, it will be fascinating to see how Hughes does on the pitch. He was a quality striker three years ago and apparently he has been staying in shape by playing on a prison team.
But he will not be able to play for the League One club just yet after being red-carded for “kicking or striking another player” while still a lag.
Hughes, 32, was playing for a team sent out by Featherstone prison, near Wolverhampton, in the Staffordshire County League.
His sending off earned him a 35-day suspension. He has served 28 days but has seven to go — starting from September 3, when Featherstone’s new season begins.
Although the incident took place during an amateur game, the punishment also applies to Football League matches.
A 35-day suspension. They don’t mess around in the prison leagues, do they? It will be interesting to see how Hughes holds up under the heat he will inevitably receive from some fans.
