IFFHS: Barca Best Club of All-Time (Since 1991)
By: chris | January 23rd, 2009
The gushing over Barca continues, only this one isn’t limited to their current world crushing squad, it’s for their run of the last 17 years – apparently that’s when IFFHS began using statistics, which makes this so much more official. And, like their current domestic campaign, they’ve done it with a hefty cushion between themselves and the bridesmaid (ManU). IFFHS doesn’t exactly put out rankings which should be seen as the gold standard, but it’s pretty interesting nonetheless (as evidenced by #16 in the rankings, a club which is now in Italy’s Serie B).
The rankings go all the way down to #204 (big ups, PAOK), but here are the Top 15 plus one just to make sure you don’t take it too seriously.
1. Barcelona (SPN) 757
2. Manchester United (ENG) 678
3. Juventus FC (ITA) 621
4. AC Milan (ITA) 611
5. Real Madrid (SPN) 605
6. Inter Milan (ITA) 567
7. Bayern Munich (GER) 563
8. Arsenal (ENG) 550
9. River Plate (ARG) 503
10. Chelsea (ENG) 442
11. Liverpool (ENG) 435
12. Porto (POR) 425
13. Boca Juniors (ARG) 420
14. AS Roma (ITA) 405
15. Ajax Amsterdam (HOL) 400
16. Parma (ITA) 373
Lots of love to Argentina (or just Buenos Aires), particularly River Plate who thumped both Liverpool and Chelsea – must be a new money thing, at least in one case. And very interesting to see the club which spearheaded perhaps the biggest cheating scandal of this time period given third – guess statistics don’t account for that. And Parma annihilates the theory it’s about “what have you done for me lately” – basically because all they’ve done lately is get relegated.
Nothing to take to the bank – unless you’re a Barca fan, of course (and who isn’t these days) – but feel free to curse IFFHS to eternal damnation anyway.

I’d add that judging by the IFFHS website (www.iffhs.de), it’s also safe to say that Netscape Navigator 3.0 is the best browser of all time.

What a joke. Chelsea(2 league titles) in 10th and Lyon(7 in the last 7 years) not in the top 20.

That’s because 7 Ligue 1 titles equal roughly .5 EPL titles, and 2 > .5
Maybe in 28 years.

Chris, you can’t really fault the IFFHS for “not having existed” before 1991… :] (technically they were created in 1984, it’s their “Club World Ranking” that was started in ‘91).
In the end though, the ranking is what it is: best teams of the past two decades. Not beyond. The fact they are calling it an “All-Time” ranking just serves as further proof of the IFFHS’s desperate attempts at being recognized.
Interesting to note that compared to last year, the top 3 clubs haven’t changed (Juve lost one spot to Man Utd… the UCL/EPL thing probably helped).

Except Parma have had some real great talent (Gila before he learned that vanishing trick, among many others) that they’ve sold off. I wouldn’t rank them 16th, but they definitely aren’t that bad.
