IFFHS Club World Rankings (July 2010 Edition)

By: Jan | August 5th, 2010

Dr Alfredo PögeThe International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) released their current club world ranking a few days ago.

A ranking unfazed by the subjective and the imprecise and all the more impressed by the hard truth of numbers.

The IFFHS explains the exact method used to compile the rankings on their website. Though, whenever I visit the site I’m usually drawn to the history section instead, as I’m still amazed that the IFFHS is for real. And it’s not just for real, it also tells the story of a man – Dr. Alfredo Pöge – and his dream to keep track of football results in early 1980s East Germany. His number crunching attracted the attention of the communist regime, who apparently deemed it subversive enough to expel him and force him to continue his hobby over at the West German enemy. There’s a script for a bad 90’s made for TV film in there. If only more East Germans had known that keeping track of football results could have been their ticket to freedom.

Anyway, here are the July 2010 rankings of the best or rather most successful clubs of the last year. For the full list, check out the IFFHS website.

  • These rankings are bulletproof. Fulham is far, far superior to Arsenal, Sevilla, and Real Madrid (rolls eyes). Back to the abaci, stat nerds.

    Stupid what a waste.

I love the idea of the IFFHS ... but I question their methods. Fulham had a more successful year last year than Manchester United? Because they made the Europa League final? They had a great year, but the difference in league standing should count for more, I think.

I think the weighting of the Europa League is a bit over the top (CL 14 points for a win, EL 12 points for a win...). Some adjustments there and the ranking would improve. Bonus points for the team that actually won something would be a good idea as well.

It is hard to figure how Barca got ahead of Inter Milan when Inter won all three titles last year and Bayern who won two?
  • Jan
They are level on points. I guess Barca is up there because they won the league with 99 points, while e.g. Inter won the league with just 82 points.
