Ilhan Mansiz Stars In Sequel To The Cutting Edge

By: The Offside | October 28th, 2010

Star from a mainstream team sport is forced to retire early through injury. After taking another job, he’s approached to begin figure skating. Does so with flying colors, and ends up falling in love with his partner in their quest for the Olympics.

I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.

(I haven’t. Swear.)

You may remember Ilihan Mansiz for things like this:

And this:

In a few years time, you may remember him for things like a triple toe-loop and highly questionable, discomfort-inducing male fashion. Because he’s taking his fancy footwork and trickeration for a ride in his path to becoming the real life version of Doug Dorsey.

In 2008, at age 32, German-born Mansiz took to the ice for the first time in his life — as part of a Turkish television show in which celebrities are paired up with professional ice-skaters for a competition lasting several weeks.

Partnered with Olga Bestandigova, a Slovak figure skater who competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics, Mansiz won the show.

Mansiz said Bestandigova — now his girlfriend — dreamt of taking part in another Olympic Games but did not have a partner.

“We had so much fun and trained for between six and eight hours a day,” he told Reuters. “We came on in leaps and bounds so we decided to train for the Olympics.”

Anything else would indicate I’ve actually seen the movie of note, so…err…

Good luck.

Has anyone ever skate before when they talk about this?

The guy is 34, started skating at 32 and there is actually talk about going
    to the Olympics?
If he was an ICE HOCKEY PLAYER, this would be a hard feat and even more so at that age
but in this case, its totally ludicrous.
The man's role is much easier technically that a man doing it solo: he's the donkey whos main job is to lift the girl but skaters have been doing this since they could walk.

BTW, she was in the 2002 Olympics? She is OVER the hill in this sport for the next Olympics.

  • There's nothing wrong with having seen that movie ;) I've seen it a few too many times, because my sister was really keen on figure skating back in the late 80s and early 90s.
