I’m David Beckham and I did not approve this Political Ad

philippe-leuba.jpgEveryone is looking to capitalize as Brand Beckham continues its inevitable build up until that sacred moment when the Golden One steps foot on American soil. Companies are bidding crazy money to have their logo adorn his chest. Rap stars are seeking to increase their profile by threatening to kick his ass. Celebrity friends are turning to him for sage advice during their darkest moments. And a politician in Switzerland is using Becks to help his political campaign.

The politician in question is Philippe Leuba, a former football referee who used a picture of David Beckham to promote his election campaign. The Beckham camp is naturally none too pleased with this and have stepped in to put in an end to the photo’s distribution.

The photo, carried by several Swiss newspapers last week, shows the former England captain shaking hands with Philippe Leuba ahead of a 2005 friendly between England and Argentina.

Leuba is standing in local government elections in the western Swiss region of Vaud and a thought bubble placed next to Beckham in the photo has the player supposedly wishing: “I hope you are just as impartial in the state parliament as you were on the football pitch.”

Not that I am anything close to an expert on Swiss politics, but if I were an adviser for Leuba I would suggest that he might want to downplay that bit about refereeing on his resume. Most referees in this world couldn’t be elected dog catcher let alone to a state parliament.
