It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s SuperMessi! (And a Weeping Pep)

After this (game-winning) goal today, I got a note from Chris that read like this:

Please tell me you just saw that Lionel Messi goal. Did he just Superman that into the net with his chest?

Actually, I’m not sure he even made physical contact. I’m pretty sure he just sent it into the back of the net through sheer will and/or some kind of force field.

And the Messi-ah again saves the day for Barcelona, who add the Club World Cup to their list of titles for 2009 — their sixth.

This led to one of the most adorable/awkward videos of all time as manager Pep Guardiola sobs and player after player does the, “Yeah, dude, it’s okay… Gosh, look at the time…” thing.

In the game, Barcelona were, as expected, the heavy favorites with one betting site listing them at 2/5 odds. (Meaning you’d have to bet $50 to make a $20 profit.) Estudiantes were a distant second at 9/1.

For most of the game it looked like Estudiantes hadn’t read the script; they took the lead in the 37th and then came oh so close to holding on long enough to win it. Then Pedro’s equalizer in the 89th minute dashed South American hopes and sent the game into extra time, where SuperMessi’s super goal finished things off.

I think it's worth noting that although people thought it was a given that Barcelona would win, Estudiantes made them suffer more than Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Lyon, etc...

Wow - three great goals. Messi's was amazing, but the Estudiantes goal was pretty spectacular too, picking out a header like that between two defenders. And Pedrito's equalizer was no slouch either.

Ibra had to say something nasty to crack up a weeping Pep.
I wonder what he would have said.
