Japanese Fan Attacks Players On Pitch

By: chris | September 21st, 2008

Add this to the list of many reasons why the J. League needs to come mainstream. Kashiwa player Alex was lining up to take a standard corner against the Kashima Antlers when a fan wielding a giant flag whacked him upside the head with it. Alex stayed down for a while but got back up and, when the game resumed, another corner came on the other side of the pitch. The same fan, fantastically elusive, grabbed another flag and attacked the next corner kick. The fans took matters into their own hands and apprehended the fellow…before some of them ran onto the pitch later in the game.

Maybe the Kashiwa club, or J. League for that matter, could think about making the stands more than 6 inches from the pitch?

Seeing that flag go from one end to the other is fucking hilarious!

It was cool seeing both groups of supporters wearing the same color shirts. Is there trouble between different fans often in Japan?

Actually, the J-League has mandated that the visiting teams have the ends behind one of the goals as a fan section, because they do not need to handle the fighting in the stands, like a Raiders game.

The Hitachi Soccer Field in Kashiwa cannot be enlarged, or shrunk, there is just no room around the stadium. Probably Kashiwa should have more police, but if you’ve seen the size of flags that the Kashima (red team) have at the home games behind their goal (the one that the fan was running behind the goal), they have those almost all across the end line.

    Google map of the stadium
