Jens Lehmann Minds his Manners

By: Bob | October 23rd, 2006

jens-lehmann-paper-airplane.jpgIn between the lines when he is smacking around opposing players, Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann doesn’t always come of as the most polite of fellows. But off the pitch you can be assured that he knows which fork to use at the dining table.

Lehmann and his Germany teammates have all been given a crash course in manners based on the writings of 18th Century writer and freemason Adolph Freiherr Knigge, the Miss Manners of his day if you will. What has Jens learned?

“I didn’t know that you had to eat faster so as not to embarrass your dining partner,” he admitted after the Knigge course.

The things you learn. I would never have taken Lehmann to be one of those annoyingly impolite slow eaters, but it is nice to see he is changing his ways.

Uncouth English speaking players have nothing to worry about. Knigge’s treatise on politeness does not appear to be available in the English language on Amazon.

To check out a behind the scenes view of the manners of Lehmann and his German teammates, you can watch the video below from the documentary, Germany: A Summer’s Tale. My buddy Bense in Dortmund claims you don’t need to speak German to appreciate the film, but somehow I feel cheated not being able to understand the words of wisdom coming out of the mouth of Lukas Podolski.

I would love to know what Jens said to Sonko in the tunnel area before the Reading game. He was nowhere to be seen and during the game he had words with that Hunt fellow too.

All Podolski says in this extract is “Hey Schweini” roughly translated to English as “Hey piggy” ;-)
I haven’t seen the whole movie so far, but I can imagine that there is not much more you’ll here from Poldi.
