Jurgen Sierens’ Comedy Goalkeeping: Funnier With or Without Music?
By: Daryl | November 23rd, 2009It’s behind you!
Poor Jurgen Sierens. The Roeselare keeper stopped a long-range shot from Anderlecht’s Moroccan midfielder Mbark Boussoufa, but then lost the ball. Sierens attempted to locate said spherical object with a 360 degree spin. Which was successful in that he found the ball, but unsuccessful in that he swept into his own net. Anderlecht won the game 3-1.
Here’s a question for you though. Is this Belgian goalkeeper blunder funnier with original commentary (above) or with Benny Hill music (below)?
[Benny Hill version spotted on TVGOLO]
For myself, original commentary wins every time. Funny music is the YouTube football equivalent of canned laughter on a sitcom, and I like to laugh when I find something funny, not when someone cues me to do so. Just saying.
I’d even extend this out to highlight videos. I’ve lost count of the number of perfectly good player highlight videos that someone has felt the need to ruin with an inappropriate soundtrack. Like this otherwise excellent collection of Gigi Buffon saves inexplicably set to Avril Lavigne, for example.

Yeah, the commentary for me too. Probably not if it were English though. Tyldesley would suck the life right out of it.
