Just Pump it

By: Bob | October 23rd, 2007

The big news from the sports business world Tuesday is that Nike has gobbled up Umbro, which provides an excuse to post the best soccer commercial never to hit the airwaves. Slap on a Just Do It tagline and it works perfectly. Which teams may be impacted by the Swoosh deal? There is England’s national team, of course, as well as West Ham, Everton, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Rangers and a bunch of teams you’ve probably never heard of but who will likely end up wearing the same boring kits that every other Nike-sponsored teams wear. And I’m not just saying that because Puma is kind enough to advertise on The Offside, but because Puma’s kits are infinitely superior.

Lyon is sponsored by Umbro, which I love because I think they do a good job with Lyon’s kits. Nike kits are so blah.

It’s too bad for Lyon because last year, they had the option of switching to Nike but preferred to stay with Umbro. I guess now they have no choice.

Just because Nike bought them out doesn’t mean everyone who works for Umbro gets fired. Nike has been the devil longer than the devil himself but even the devil isn’t that psycodic. They may let the designers continue their great work and “possibly” slap on the swoosh at the end of the day. Thats what they did with Bauer at first, then no one was buying the skates so they switched it back. It could be worse. Adidas makes 2 jerseys a year and just changes the colors for the teams.
