KFC Uerdingen Looking For A 24 Hour Coach On eBay

By: chris | January 10th, 2008

kfc.jpgFourth division German side KFC Uerdingen is in a lot of financial trouble. They declared bankruptcy just last month, and have a long climb back to even. So they’re looking to eBay to solve their financial issues, and hopefully take them out of the red and into the black sometime in the next century.

Back in 2006, they held another eBay auction, offering playing time to the highest bidder. And normally you’d think “who cares about playing the German fourth division?”. Well, it was a friendly against none other than Bayern Munich, which holds some weight. So for the sum of €2,688, a 33 year old insurance salesman was able to play a whole 4 minutes against the Bavarian giants. Since that worked out so well, the club has decided to take to eBay again, this time looking for a coach for 24 hours.

So, for a certain price, you get to experience life as a coach in Germany’s fourth division, including:

According to the team’s eBay listing, the winner of the auction will over a 24-hour period experience “all the joys coaching has to offer.” From the sound of things, it’s more like a whole coaching career in a day.

On Jan. 19, he (or she) will introduce themselves to the players as the new coach before leading the former Bundesliga team through a friendly game against Rot Weiß Oberhausen with the help of real-life coach Aleksandar Ristic.

Following the match, the eBay winner will learn of his (or her) dismissal, according to the listing, and “be left searching for words” like many a formerly great coach in the sport’s history.

Sounds wonderful.

The auction (which can be viewed in German here) still has about 5 days to run, and is currently coming in at a fair €2,110 – at least as of Wednesday night. The only problem being? They owe €250,000 (which is like……a lot short), and if they don’t get it by the end of January the club will be dissolved (I feel like there’s a Disney movie somewhere in here). This means they’re going to have to get real lucky in the next 5 days, or start auctioning off an assload more than just a 24 hour sideline gig. (Like people.)

Simple solution: Why not ask to be sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken? Seems like a match made in heaven.

What a fun idea. MLS teams running in the red, take note. (I would SO pay to coach the Galaxy for a game.)

Four days to go and it’s up to €3500. Still a bit short of the required €250000. But I’m still hoping for a Charles Dickens rich benefactor to come out of the shadows with a shock €250.000 bid.;-)
