King of Morocco > FC Barcelona

An 18 year old Moroccan schoolboy is in seriously hot water after paying allegiances to his favorite football team, FC Barcelona, over the king of Morocco, Mohamed VI. And really, who can blame him? Barca’s hot shit right now. I’d like to see King Mohamad VI do the kingly equivalent of score 17 in 4 games. That’d be like, what, conquer Northwestern Africa? (I’m sure he’s a wonderful guy, but Barca he is not.)

The boy’s offense is changing the phrase “God, The Nation, The King” on the classroom blackboard to “God, The Nation, Barcelona”. Bad-talking the king is very poo-pooed in Morocco and rarely heard of, thus landed the boy in jail. But Unprofessional Foul, where we found this story, has uncovered two recent cases where the royal family wasn’t given its royal respect, ultimately winding up in different verdicts/outcomes:

Based on the precedent set earlier this year, it’s not looking good — Fouad Mourtada was jailed for 3 years after creating a spoof Facebook profile for the King’s brother. A blogger was also jailed in 2008 for speaking out against the king on his website, but he was released and cleared upon appeal, giving some hope to Belassal and his family.

There’s been a moderate public outcry, which has helped in the past; so it might work out, might not.

But if you’re feeling frisky and want to pay allegiances in place of the king next time, could we perhaps suggest choosing Los Blancos instead? The lad clearly found himself on the wrong side of the divide.
