LA Galaxy to have hooligan-trained SWAT team on standby for Beckham matches

By: Bob | March 19th, 2007

la-galaxy-fans.jpgIt is a story that many a right-wing commentator can tell so well. Immigrants move into a neighborhood in the United States and within a matter of days the place that used to be a tranquil paradise with nary a problem is transformed into a crime ridden mess where no right minded person would ever want to step foot. The immigrant in this case is David Beckham and the beautiful neighborhood soon to be a dangerous hellhole is the Home Depot Center where the LA Galaxy play their home games.

According to the British tabloid Daily Star, the LA police are preparing for the worst when Beckham arrives in July. A special team of Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) will be on standby during Galaxy cases in case the thousands of ex-pat English fans who are expected to attend the games decide to get their hooligan on.

The police officer said: “Given Beckham mania here, we could have an explosive situation on our hands. We hope to stand down the unit if there are no problems but it is better to be safe than sorry.”

And the LAPD officer added: “Some areas in Carson have significant numbers of gang members and so-called English hooligans might want to square up to them too.

“But they should be warned that, like us, those guys carry guns.

“Anyone who comes here with the intent to cause trouble could find themselves in the gravest possible situation.”

Gee, thanks for the warning about the guns.

This is the funniest article I’ve read in a long time. If you have ever attended an MLS game or watched one on television you know that the greatest threat of hooliganism comes from fans like me who want to smack around the 10-year-old girls who sit behind us blowing horns the entire 90 minutes. With the exception of some passionate supporters sections, the vast majority of MLS fans are families and the vast majority do not travel to away matches. You can bet that the family element will dominate games at the Home Depot Center.

The article also implies that Americans view all English fans as being hooligans and that American sports never have any fan violence even though the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, for example, have set up a court in their own stadium to book fans who are arrested for getting into fights at their games. Last time I checked Beckham didn’t play for the Eagles.

haha well im from england and let me just give u lot a quick lesson on holigans, holigans r usually part of a firm a firm is made for a football club (or soccer club as my colonial cousins will call it), were ever the club plays the firm will go, now david beckham is not a football club he’s not even a decent football player, thus he has now firm thus there is no holigans and any1 wanting to go and watch a 31 year old has been kick a football around for a team with a name like a chocolate bar ur havin a laugh ok he’s gonna atract more support probably but who the fu*k is gonna start fightin cos beckham is playin hahahahaha, this is just another part taken out of the big book of stupid things yanks do lol, if the usa invested more money into helping world poverty as they do into arming riot police for holigans in america hahahaha ahhhh , then the world wud b a better place ur not in london or rome ur in a ur nice little town in the states were the only violence is drive bye’s wake up and smell the bacon boys for god sake …..

ohhh and just read the first comment about the egales and the last bit about gangs and gund and that crap, here’s another little lesson first off no beckham played for the mancs in england, were there is alot of trouble b4 u go talkin about some eagles u dont know wat holigans r in ur sports so dont try and comprehend, 2nd point ‘they carry guns like us, first off w/e there carryin it doesn’t matter but the odds of them coming face to face is very unlikely no fans in the states will go to away games and r not at all holigans, if the world cup was ever played again in the states with italien and english fans there not to mention turkish american gangs wud get to learn a thing or 2 about organised crime lets put it that way but like evry american they cant c wats going on outside america so this will prob never happen altho i wish it does like i said b4 about time u lot woke up and smelt the bacon

alot of people talk about hooliganism without knowing very much about it. i doubt it will ever be a problem in the states to be honest, when it took off in the 70’s in england there was basically no order at football matches, policing is too tight these days over here and the officers don’t carry guns so no worries over there. it was a cultural thing and i reckon america is just too big to be honest.
