La Liga Over, Barca Winners, According To Betting Company.
By: chris | January 27th, 2009
If you’re a fan of any other Spanish side, something says all this “Barca, Barca, Barca” is beginning to sound an awful lot like “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha”. But this can’t last forever, so weather the storm ’til they come back down to earth. Or to the clouds, at least, as they’ll need to fall from the heavens first.
Expekt.com, a betting company, have emphatically “declared” La Liga to be over and are paying out to their customers who bet on Barca winning the league this year…in January. So really, no need for games anymore.
We declare that the title race is over in Spain and congratulate our customers who backed Barcelona to win the Spanish league. The money will start to be paid out to their accounts during Tuesday, says Dan Vikman, Press Manager at Expekt.com.Of course all other league winner bets will still be valid. If another team should win the Spanish league we will pay out on them as well. But even if it is 18 rounds to go, we see no competition, says Dan Vikman at Expekt.com.
Yeah, still 18 rounds to go but it’d take one of the most staggering collapses of all-time for Barca not to win the league. Not because of how often they’re winning, but because of the margin by which they’re thumping their sacrifices. Even if they tone it down 20% they’ll still have Spain hiding the women and children. Simply that good.
To look at this through another lens, Sports Club Stats, a site we featured little over a year ago which gives the percentages of championdom, says that it’s pretty much a lost cause as well, with Barcelona having a 91% (alright, 90.6%) chance of taking home the league. Sounds about right.
(Real Madrid have a 5.6% chance; Sevilla have a 2.2% chance. The rest are lost causes.)
So that’s that. No need to watch any more La Liga; unless, of course, you feel like watching the Barcelona victory parade.
(Alright, maybe, just maybe, this was a publicity stunt. But in the end it will also be nothing more than an early payment.)

barely watch La Liga anyway. Besides watching Lyon, i usually just stick to Serie A football.

The Goal article on this said the reason for doing it may have been to get people to stop betting on Barca…you know, pay out now so you don’t have to pay out more later.

I just want Barca to lose a game so people will be quiet. And then I want them to lose more games so Real Madrid can come back and win

Every time a company does a stunt like this it always ends up that they get proved wrong.

Does seem like a bit of a jinx on Barca, but considering their quality this year, probably doesn’t matter much. Brooks’ point makes some sense, that they’d just want to cut off bets, but it seems like they could do that by just giving crappy odds on it.

…or they could just stop taking bets. This smacks of publicity stunt/opportunity to look stupid.

Kinda reminds me of the 2006-07 Serie A season I think it was, when SNAI (Italy’s betting agency) stopped taking bets on Inter winning the Scudetto like 10 matchdays before it all ended.
This story however, actually paying the customers outright has the publicity stunt stink all over it.
