Landon Donovan Moves one Step Further from the Record. Maybe
By: Laurie | January 18th, 2008
Tomorrow’s USMNT game against Sweden is the 500th for the team. It would have been a great opportunity for Landon Donovan to score a goal and make himself the all-time leading goalscorer for the USA, right?
It turns out that one goal may not do it. It seems that FIFA has disallowed the penalty taken against Denmark last year because Denmark apparently didn’t field their A team.
“FIFA, soccer’s governing body, has not recognized the Americans’ 3-1 victory over Denmark on Jan. 20 last year as a full “A” international. Donovan converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute of the game.
When initially contacted by The Associated Press in August, FIFA responded: ‘The Danish FA confirmed in January that this match was not played by their official ‘A’ team. Therefore we did not register it.’”
Ouch.
Do you think Eric Wynalda was behind this?
Of course, the US is protesting, and has sent all relevant “but this was a real game” documents to FIFA, and they’re asking the Danish Federatino to respond as well. In the meantime, they’re continuing to count the goal.
But Landon? Maybe you’d better score two tomorrow. Just in case.

lol, I wonder if FIFA has ever taken a look at the “one thousand” goals scored by meu pai Romario.
