While Karlsruhe’s winless streak ended against Leverkusen, it was in their previous match against Hoffenheim which they ended their goal-scoring duck. Karlsruhe had not found the net for like, ages.

Okay to be precise, eight matches without even finding the back of the net. That is how long Karlsruhe’s goal-scoring drought lasted until they faced Hoffenheim in the previous matchday. To see Karlsruhe finally notching up a win through a goal which not many had saw it coming against Leverkusen, that is quite a feat.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller was definitely not amused after the match. Not over the goal, considering Leverkusen have yet to win in their temporary home in Duesseldorf (their BayArena home is undergoing redevelopment at the moment to increase its seating capacity). What really made Voeller fuming was that just on Tuesday, Leverkusen was through in the DFB-Pokal (German FA Cup) final at the same ground which they lost to Karlsruhe.

As for Sebastian Langkamp, even he himself did not expect the goal to go into the net either. He was saying this, “I just wanted to clear the ball. The main thing was to kick the ball out of play and I had already turned round thinking it was going into the stands. I really did not imagine it would go in.”
