Liverpool Make the Premier League Title Race a Lot More Interesting

By: Daryl | March 14th, 2009

When Cristiano Ronaldo put away that 23rd minute penalty, Man Utd looked like a team destined for an easy stroll to the title. But then something went wrong with Nemanja Vidic’s circuitry.

First the big Serb forgot how to head a ball and let Torres through to equalize.

Then Evra fouled Gerrard, and Gerrard disproved the “don’t take the spot kick if you’ve been fouled” theory (which I’ve always thought was stupid) to make it 2-1.

Then Vidic completely malfunctioned by getting sent off and setting Aurelio up to score from the free-kick, before Dossena made it 4-1 with a lob over Edwin van der Sar (who really should be unlobbable at 6′5″+).

If you haven’t seen the game yet (or if you want to see the best bits again) we’ve got about eight minutes of highlights above, via via 101 Great Goals.

Definitely a shock result at Old Trafford. And it definitely makes the Premier League title race a lot more interesting than it was. Even though Man Utd are still four points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand.

You can join in the celebrations on Liverpool Offside and the commiserations on Man Utd Offside. And you can probably sense some cautious optimism on Chelsea Offside too.

I think Stevie G was inspired by Zizou’s praise. (I know I would be.)

    Rob Smyth of The Guardian:

That moment, that moment as the ball slipped off the side of Dossena’s foot – that moment when you realised that, no, on this occasion he hadn’t welted it out of the ground in the comedy style; this time he had weighted it perfectly; that he, ANDREA NAFFING DOSSENA, had rubbed the saltiest salt imaginable in ma gaping wound – was truly one of the most miserable of my life. And believe me, fields come no more competitive. It was the moment when time stood still, when every sin you have ever committed – every penny sweet you nicked from The Corner Shop as a child, every schadenfreude sandwich you’ve ever wolfed down – was thrown back in your face. Like the final episode of A Popular US Cop Show That Recently Ended, only 1,000,000 times worse. As soon as this clockwatch ends I am going to lie down and cry.

At that level of lob, I don’t think there is anything any human can do. At that point you need a jet pack. You could see it in van Der Sar’s face though when it went over, just a simple “fuck you” at Dossena.

Now EroticTangerines has left me trying to figure out which popular US cop show just ended.

(If there’s not soccer on, I tend to forget I have a TV.)

It was a statement game for Liverpool. They said al the wanted to Manchester United. The other statement game was Arsenal – although not playing the same caliber opponents.
    Arshavin looked brilliant.

I am biased but I think Arsenal are shaping up to be quite dangerous. The league is obviously out of reach but they are just getting healthy + Arshavin (though not in CL)… They can definitely beat Man Utd and possibly narrow the gap and their prospects in the FA Cup and CL are promising once Cesc gets back… Look out for the Gunners next year
