I’ll see your goal and raise you a long-range goal

By: Bob | September 27th, 2007

My apologies if you were one of the dozens who saw Seton Hall play Princeton in collegiate soccer last week and you have already seen this impressive long range effort by Eliseo Giusfredi. His midfield goal came right after Princeton had tied the game and at the precise moment when the Tigers’ keeper was daydreaming about his 1540 on the SATs.

It’s okay, that guy from the Hall who scored’s gonna be fetching the keeper’s faxes and mocha lattes in a few years anyways. Let him have his moment in the sun for now, I say. And yes, I have free license to make fun of SHU, I went to the Hall’s preparatory school for high school.

Always nice to see the Ivies lose. Especially at a sport some of them might actually sort of almost care about. Great goal, with a huge dash of luck … one of those that are misses 99% of the time and everyone looks dumbfounded at the player and asks “What the hell are you doing taking a shot from midfield?”

Aw, Ian, where’s the love? Not all Ivy Leaguers are that bad. Anyway, as a recent Princeton grad and soccer fan, I hate to see Princeton lose . . . but if we’re going to lose, we might as well be felled by an extraordinary goal. I’d rather see that than a back pass trickle through the keeper’s legs. Luck or no luck, it’s a pretty shot.

That dude’s a stud, apparently — seriously considered turning pro after last season, and will probably go this summer. And a New Yawker, thanks very much.

J - Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of friends who went to Ivies - they don’t all suck. But will I ever root for one in any sport? Nope. Not unless they were playing against a team I disliked more … (imagining) … maybe Hearts v. Princeton in a glamour friendly at Tynecastle.

Martha, by New Yorker you mean from New Jersey right? We in Jersey get enough crap what with the Giants and Jets who play in the state being called “New York Giants/Jets.” Why can’t the state claim at least one half field scorer for fame and recognition purposes? PS - Keep the “NY” Red Bull, no NJ inquires for posession as far as they’re concerned.

ESPN barely shows goals from American professional soccer so I’d say an obscure college soccer game has about as much a chance of making SportsCenter as my Friday night poker game highlights.

And the comment really didn’t have anything to do with those vapid diatribes in Good Will Hunting. It was more about pointing out the disparity in quality of education between the two institutions and making a small joke about it. (In reality, who CAN compare to Princeton?)

Ian, I totally don’t blame you. You can’t root for Ivies. I can’t root for SEC schools, having been force-fed SEC-propaganda my whole childhood. No offense taken, of course. Honestly, I’m just glad college soccer gets a little notice, at least on the blog circuit.

Greg, I only meant he had the misfortune to be born in NJ, but really wishes he was from NY. (God this whole state rivalry is awesome! Missouri has nothing this cool to get into.)

I bet Missouri folks argue with those of Kansas over whose Kansas City is better.
