Lyon Fitness Coach: Doping in Football is Inevitable
By: Bob | March 6th, 2007
While the perpetual plagues of the football world — fan violence and racism – continue to make the headlines, another oldie but goodie has made its way back to the surface of our consciousness. It has been a while since the issue of doping has been an issue but the idea that footballers might be cheating is always present, at least if you are to believe someone who knows a thing or two about the subject, Lyon and France national team fitness coach Robert Duverne.
Speaking in the French daily Le Monde, Duverne suggested that the crazy busy schedule that most players face today makes it all the more likely that they will follow the route of cyclists and succumb to the pressures of doping.
The match calendar makes doping inevitable. Television imposes too much soccer on the player, putting the game up alongside cycling. It gets more complicated each time a player has to recuperate after a tough match, that’s what brings about doping. You’re playing two games a week, and that’s just not humanly possible.
Not humanly possible? Go ahead and tell that to the players on Duverne’s own team who are playing their second match in four days today when they face Roma in the Champions League. Does that mean if they don’t collapse by halftime they are cheating? Probably not, but having your fitness trainer talk about the inevitability of cheating is one way to ratchet up the scrutiny on your own team.
