Man City to Embarrass Themselves with Buffon and Totti Bids?
By: Daryl | January 21st, 2009
This Man City business is getting sillier all the time. After the high profile attempt to capture Kaka ended like this, followed by a possible tantrum from their other high profiler Robinho, you’d think the new Man City regime might have learned a lesson.
And that lesson should have been: Don’t run before you can walk. Don’t put the cherries on top until you’ve built the cake. Don’t… well, you get the idea.
But according to some (Google translated) reports from Italy, Man City still have representatives in Italy trying to sign at least one high profile footballer. And if they’re really chasing Gigi Buffon and Francesco Totti then Man City are about to embarrass themselves big time.
Here’s why bidding for either of those players would be the stupidest thing Man City could do right now:
1. City’s reputation is still reeling from the Kaka bid.
2. The club can’t really afford another high profile knock back
And so they’re going to bid for two players who are inextricably linked with their respective clubs? Totti’s been at Roma for 20 years and Buffon (though he’s had his recent injury problems) is so loyal to Juve that he stayed with them for that season in Serie B.
Neither of those guys are going anywhere. Especially not to spend the later years of their career at a non Champions League club.
Do Man City think that just because they got Robinho they can get anyone? Truth is that the Robinho transfer was a unique situation with a player who just wanted out of Madrid and really wanted to play for Chelsea. It wasn’t necessarily a sign of things to come.
You know who Man City should look at? Blackburn Rovers.
When Jack Walker pledged to spend Blackburn to the top in the early 90s, the first thing the club did was put in a bid for Gary Lineker. I remember reading about that bid on teletext and laughing. And I wasn’t the only one, everybody laughed.
So Blackburn got sensible and signed David Speedie and Mike Newell. And David Speedie and Mike Newell did the business. Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer came later.
There are only ten days left of the January transfer window, and Man City should use those ten days to get serious and make some proper signings. Signing Nigel de Jong is a start, the bigger names can come later.

Totti has a Roma tattoo and has stated that he will retire there, or something like that.
Buffon would never leave Juve.Posted from

mele- exactly. if buffon didnt leave juve when they had their serie b exodus do they actually think he’d leave now? theyd be better off trying to raid young up and comers who havent established die hard loyalties to their clubs and those clubs fan bases. why dont they try for a couple of the napoli young guns or udineses

bidding for Totti is like trying to convince Giggs to leave man united, or gerrard to leave liverpool. it will never happen

mele: I have heard rumours that Totti has a Man City tattoo, so don’t rule it out.
Seriously though, it’s ridiculous. Daryl’s totally right with regards to using Blackburn as a template. Sign solif players first, like De Jong, Bridge and er..Bellamy, and then after some good seasons go for the big-boys.

I should really sign in, hate not being able to edit mistakes like writing ’solif’ instead of ’solid’..

This is getting ridiculous ! and who
are they after? A guy with a tattoo
of his present club and another guy
who didn’t leave his after relegation.

why do people assume unsubstantiated rumours started by the media of are true?
Not a single Man City source has mentioned Francesco Totti and as far as ‘keepers, their efforts aren’t towards Gigi Buffon.
“Mele” is correct that both wouldn’t leave and neither would City go in that direction

honestly its all rumor mongering. Im in the camp of those that believe the kaka nonesense was manufactured by burlesconi (or however you spell it).

This is a joke. City is a joke. Stick to bringing in decent premier league players and making your way up the table before doing stuff like this.
ON THEIR WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A BILLION IN THE BANK!!!

The point is, City stand a better chance of signing Jesus than these two…
which coincidentally, would get Kaka to change his mind.Posted from

old apple:
part of it was berlusconi (naming outrageous 100m+ price tags) and part of it was legitimate Man City talks trying to pry Kaka from Milan.
I agree with matt, trying to get some younger players from smaller clubs, like Napoli or Udine, or Rrem/La Liga clubs as well (Geovanni from Hull?) would be a much better start. Once they’ve achieved something greater than battling relegation in the Prem, then they can start making big bids for big players. At this point they should be focusing on staying in the Prem, and possibly unsettling players for the future. (This is my Football Manager skills talking

The only keeper Man City have a confirmed interest in is Shay Given with at least one confirmed bid rejected by Newcastle. This is more media nonsense.
As for the Kaka bid I see nothing wrong with trying to bring one of the worlds best players to your club if you can afford it. That they got so close is impressive. Almost as impressive as Berlusconi has been with the media. I personally don’t see what’s so embarrassing about failing to get one of the worlds best players to your club. I also don’t see why we got all these 100 million is outrageous and the death of football stories when Real offered a similar amount to Man Utd for Ronaldo just 6 months ago and we got nothing like that. People saying during these financially difficult times that it’s out of order need to learn some basic economics too. Hundreds of millions coming from someone’s personal wealth in Abu Dhabi into the European economy is bad how?
It’s all very well saying run before you can walk… they are bringing in solid players like de Jong and Bridge but it’s not exactly weaken the team if they do manage to bring in some superstars too is it?

I cant believe everyone believes the first rumour they read about man city.
Everyone has jumped on the lets pick on man city bandwagon this season due to our stupuidly high income of money from our new owners.
This has given any reporter a chance to link us with ANY player in the world, this isnt the first time stupid stories like this have come off and been nothing more than stories. To be honest, the media should leave well alone because its getting rather old.

I suppose you would have said that City shouldn’t have embarrassed themselves by going after Robinho either?
I agree that they need a healthy base of solid players but they have signed this type of player already (Bellamy, De Jon, Bridge). I don’t see that the 2 approaches have to be mutually exclusive and a big name or 2 is hardly going to hurt is it?
