Man Love Is The New Celebration

By: chris | August 15th, 2009

[101 Great Goals]

On Wednesday, Maradona was so disgusted by Jesus Datolo’s goal in this wholly useless friendly that he frolicked around on the ground in a tight embrace with his young stead. Nothing curious there.

And just yesterday, we saw the same thing between two teammates of Esteghlal Ahwaz of the Iranian Premier League but they, not wanting to be upstaged by Diego Maradona, took a bit further with a body-on-body manpile with smooch. Apparently man love has replaced thumb-sucking as the new celebration du jour.

I for one welcome the celebration, though I must say what we’re all thinking:

Really? You’re all 100% straight? And you want us to believe that?

I dunno, Cerberus. Latin and Mediterranean/Middle Eastern men are SO much more physically affectionate with each other than guys in the US.

I spent an entire bus ride in Rome a couple of months ago watching two young guys playing with each others’ ears and hair — and all the while visibly checking out hot women as they got on and off the bus. It’s very much a cultural thing.

Chris, you HAVE NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION! Maradona is simply going old school. Thumb sucking was just a temporary substitute. There is much speculation that the more passionate celebrations died down a bit with the no shirt removing rule, and even more that base layers are inhibiting our boys. The theory being that when everyone was hot and sweaty and happy and nekked, their joy was uncontainable — as was ours. Ah, the old days.

Note: you need to read kickette every day, and possibly find the anti-base-layers movement’s web-site. Have fun!
