Man Utd to Offer “Manager Idol” Winner an Interview
By: Daryl | April 1st, 2009
Man Utd have come up with an innovative method for replacing Alex Ferguson once the old fella finally calls it a day.
Though the big job is expected to go to a big name – Martin O’Neill and Jose Mourinho have been mentioned more than once – the club are also guaranteeing a formal interview to at least one member of the public. That lucky individual will be chosen via the nationally televised “Manager Idol” show, where contestants will display their football coaching and managerial prowess before a panel of expert judges before the public will vote for the winner.
The wannane managers will be given hypothetical situations (eg – we’re 1-0 down at half-time) and then go on stage to deliver motivational team talks to a panel of expert judges, likely made up of former professional players and managers and one celebrity Man Utd fan (early favourite is Angus Deayton, former host of Have I Got News For You).
The experts will deliver feedback and then viewers will vote via phone, text message and internet to decide who goes through to the next round.
The winning candidate will then spend a year on Man Utd’s coaching staff to learn the ropes and soak up some Fergie wisdom and will then be given a genuine job interview at the same time as all the other candidates.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that the “Manager Idol” winner will get the job, but great idea from Man Utd and should make for some fascinating viewing.

I wonder if kicking boots at the panel of judges will result in a point gain or a point deduction…

Hey, it’s pretty cool that they get to play understudy to SAF for a year. Still, it’s obvious that the winner isn’t getting the job. Maybe if it was a Championship club, but Manchester United? No way in hell…

Have you, at all, thought about the possibility of this being an April’s Fools joke?
