Manchester City Reportedly Swoop Up Afonso Alves
By: Bob | November 1st, 2007
The life of an Internet junkie often means reading a lot about players you rarely see play. One name that has frequently crossed my path during my Web travels over the past year is Afonso Alves. The Brazilian striker has been a goal scoring machine for the lowly Dutch side Heerenveen. Last season he scored 31 goals in 34 games. This year he has ten goals in four games, including seven in a single game. With numbers like that, and the fact that he has been unhappy at Heerenveen, it was easy to see that he would be moving on to greener pastures eventually.
According to reports from Holland, eventually might turn out to be January and the greener pastures might be Manchester City. The club’s owner Thaksin Shinawatra flew to Amsterdam and offered up a bundle of his looted Thai treasury – 20million euros (£13.85million) – to secure the transfer.
Manchester City have been the surprise of the season in the Premier League thus far, but that isn’t due to their strikers situation. They need help up front and going after Alves makes a lot of sense. It also will give us all a better understanding of how good he is as a player. Scoring a bundle of goals for a mediocre team in a good league is one thing, but will he be able to come close to that playing for a contending team in a physical league?
It should be fascinating to watch.
