Manchester City…too much of a good thing?

How should Manchester City deal with their player surplus?

Most Manchester City fans are overjoyed by the number of talented players making their way to the club this summer.  To say the least, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Jerome Boateng, Aleksander Kolarov and (pending financial discussions) Mario Balotelli would be impressive additions to any roster. The same cannot be said of the players who made their way to the club before Mancini was hired in late 2009- ya know, the ones that believed in the club’s vision and aspirations from the beginning (of their wealthy history)….For most clubs the hardest part is attracting and financing the recruitment of deep, talented squads.  It seems Manchester City has the opposite problem which has led to a player surplus and some embarrassing outbursts from players such as Craig Bellamy and Shay Given who are feeling abandoned by the club and Mancini in particular…

Both Given and Bellamy were brought to Manchester City by Mancini’s predecessor, Mark Hughes.  For better or for worse, Mark Hughes departure from the club can only be described as acrimonious and the manner in which it was done caused divisions within the team as some players (and fans!) spoke out against the club.  Needless to say, a few of those players never seemed to warm to Mancini when he took over from Hughes (a mere few hours later). One of those players was Craig Bellamy, who reportedly got into an argument with Mancini in February and hasn’t spoken to him since.  Bellamy’s tirade at the club (and Mancini in particular) also included an accusation that the club tried to force him to join Wolfsburg only a year and a half after he arrived in January 2009.

Bellamy is reportedly so broken up about being put out in the cold by the club, he’s considering quitting football all together…

I’m probably more unwanted than I’ve ever been. I find myself in a situation that’s hard to get my head around. I’ve felt that I’m being pushed aside there – I will remember this.

With this 25-man rule, if I don’t get in I don’t know what I will do. If I’m not on the list, which is unlikely, then the only games I will get is with the reserves.

’Ive got a fair indication of what they all think though, as I’ve had 80 minutes in pre-season. I’ve even seen players not part of the club over the last three years get more minutes than me. I’m so dejected and disheartened I could even walk away from the game.

Now, this isn’t just a player whining about not getting enough minutes – the situation is much more complex than that.  According to Bellamy, its a clear case of “we don’t want him….but we don’t want anyone else (who can hurt us) to have him.”  Wolfsburg is the only club Manchester City have been interested in negotiating with, mostly because they wanted to use him a bargaining chip to get Dzeko.  And, though (according to Craig) several other EPL clubs “in the top seven” are interested in his services, the club refuses to negotiate with rivals.

And, truth be told, I think Craig Bellamy is being reasonable.  Did I just say that?  Someone check to see if Hell has frozen over because I think this might the second time this year I’ve uttered those words.  The first, of course, being after he commented on John Terry’swell known off-field” behavior. After a career like Craig Bellamy’s – which includes faking injuries, several public falling outs and (allegedly) attacking a teammate with a golf club - he seemed to be finally hitting his stride.  In his own words, last season was undoubtedly one of his best, despite the managerial switch…

’Whatever people think about me, I’ve just come back off my best year in football. I got double figures in goals and double figures in assists, and that’s all as a midfielder. Enough said.

Now this is where I have a problem with Manchester City (if Bellamy’s accusation are true).  I understand that football is a business and the club’s primary purpose it to improve its position and ability to win trophies and titles.  Perhaps I’m naive, but surely this lust for competition and winning should be tempered with some ethical boundaries.  Keeping a player to ensure your squad has depth to survive a long, injury-filled season is one thing.  But, banishing players who could start at most clubs in the EPL to the reserves because you are afraid of the damage they might inflict against you is quite another.  While most clubs wouldn’t be able to do this because they can’t afford the extra salaries on payroll, that is clearly not a problem for Manchester City.  With their seemingly infinite resources, they can stockpile as many players as they want to waste and whittle away their careers….

Alright. I can already tell many of you are unsympathetic to Bellamy’s plight.  Whatever you think of Bellamy, just realize that this could be any player.  If Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were enticed to make their way to Manchester City, David Silva could be out in the cold.  Now, its a depressing thought to think, in that situation, the whole football community would be robbed of the opportunity to watch David Silva play.  To me, this is analogous to national teams who call-up players who have duel citizenship for a one-off cap to prevent them from playing for anyone else (even if they have no intention of ever using them as part of the team in the longterm).  Strengthening your team is one thing…sabotaging players, rivals and the fan experience is quite another.  For me, the solution is simple:  If Manchester City have no intention of playing Bellamy this season, they should negotiate with teams Bellamy is interested in playing at.  Period.

Bellamy’s situation is not unique at the club — where Shay Given has also threatened to leave if his starting spot is given to Joe Hart in Manchester City’s opening match of the EPL vs Tottenham Spurs.  Bellamy has also reported that Tevez is given similar treatment by Mancini, with neither one receiving attention (has Carlos not informed Messi?).

And oh ya, the club still has that tiny (yet costly) problem of what to do with their record-breaking signing, Robinho.  His loan deal with Santos ended August 4th so the club will either have to leave out their 42.5M Euros signing off their team list or (quickly) find another home for his as well.  When Mancini was asked about the connundrum the club faces in the coming weeks, he said…

I think it’s better for the other players to find another solution, other teams, because it’s better for players to play.

Oh, except if that means playing for one of their rivals….

And, it just turns out he's been left out of the Europa squad in favour of Robinho! Not looking good is it...

It feels like City have, like, 1,000 players, ffs!

I'm not crazy about Bellamy but I don't blame him at all for his comments. Knowing his personality, I doubt he's unwilling to take a paycut. For all his flaws, he's always seemed to me to be totally down to earth and realistic. He certainly knows he won't be paid the same wages wherever he goes. I've always liked his honesty and openness.

It's a ridiculous situation, for City players and players at other clubs. With the 25-man limit, you're going to have this entire surplus of players hanging around doing nothing without clubs collecting huge paychecks. Football clubs around Europe are not willing to pay big money anymore so if these players are going to leave, they know they'll have to take pay cuts. But it's not just the players who have to be realistic, it's the clubs that own them. They can't demand ridiculous selling prices. Wenger was right to wonder why the players' union agreed to the rule - it's going to leave a lot of them either unemployed or just collecting wages at their clubs but not playing for months, maybe even longer.
  • well i agress with your argument here. They have been trying to show to the world that they can do everything what they want as they have money. But that's not the way to treat the player especially when the player has very good talent. They will lose them for sure if it's still like this.

They're idiots. That's as simply as I can put it. It's like they're playing FM.

Also posting comments now is super annoying.
  • I know that they aren't direct rivals, but the point was more to do with City not just hoarding players for the sake of it. Garrido and Petrov could just as easily have been left out of the 25 in the same well Bellamy feels he will be but the club allowed them to move on.

It's a valid point that Bellamy deserves to be treated well, afterall he has served City extremely since joining in what was deemed a risky move in the first place. I don't think he helped himself with his whinge upon Mancini taking over, and if this is part of the fallout from that then he needs to take it on the chin.

For what it's worth, I think Bellamy should be part of the 25 and still has plenty to offer to the club. I've taken a minute to do up what would be my 25 below -

    Goalkeepers: Given, Hart, Taylor

Defenders: Richards, Kolorov, Bridge, Toure, Kompany, Onuoha, Zabaleta, Lescott, Boateng

Midfielders: De Jong, Barry, Yaya, Ireland, Silva, A. Johnson, M. Johnson, Vieira, Wright-Phillips

Forwards: Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy, Jo/Santa Cruz

Then you add the likes of Boyata, Cunningham, Weiss, Ibrahim and Nimely who are all under 21.

Of course, this is pre any additional signings like Balotelli and Milner but I would ditch Jo/Santa Cruz long before Bellamy.

(I've purposely left Robinho out also)

Didn't Weiss just say to let him go, if he's not in the plans of Mancini?
  • It seems that the City bashing is coming early this season, i.e. before a ball has even been kicked.

You say it yourself - "if Bellamy's accusation is true". That's just it, they're the words of one disillusioned player. Using it as a basis for attacking the club is a bit unfair considering numerous other players have moved on during the summer (Martin Petrov (to another Premiership club), Javier Garrido and Valeri Bojinov amongst others).

Bellamy is contracted to City. The club has to do what's best for the club, not an individual player, and strengthening one of your rivals is not really the smartest of moves. Players like Bellamy won't win City titles but they would be more than capable of taking points from them if playing for another club.

As for Robinho, City would gladly ship him off to another club, rival or otherwise, but the simple fact of the matter is no is willing to meet the valuation (which is considerably less than he was bought for two years ago) and his wage demands. That's hardly City's fault.
  • Neil,

I would hardly consider Bolton Wonderers (Petrov), Lazio (Garrido) and Parma (Bojinov) to be rivals of Manchester City (2 of those aren't even same league and aren't competing in European competition). And if no one wants Robinho, thats another story. Plus, Robinho hardly showed the club respect so I can understand giving him the middle finger.

Ultimately, I think that Bellamy deserves more from Manchester City because (despite his sordid past), he was fantastic for you last year. Does City technically have the right to withhold him? Yes. But, does Craig deserve more from City? Yes.

I know I said this on twitter, but Im actually (normally) weary to criticize Man City. I think they are often held to an unfair standard and a number of insults thrown their way are racially biased and "below the belt." But, this is about mutual respect. I believe that Bellamy did give 100% last year - he is a big reason why the club was almost able to challenge for a Champions League place last season. I can imagine the fear and injustice he feels if he believes his career is over (after finally finding some success). I think that Craig was pretty ballsy to say what I know a lot of City fans were thinking when Hughes was fired and Mancini was brought in. You are right-he doesn't have a right to better treatment, but I think he deserves it.

have a problem with City? wait until matchday to settle it.
  • Thats just it. And I should have prefaced my critique of Man City with a disclaimer that I don't really have a problem with paying huge fees and salaries to players. With short careers (and the risk of injury ever present), I don't blame players for wanting to ensure their (and their families) financial future. This is different-this is about robbing players and fans of the chance to play because Man City are afraid they can't handle playing against them....either play them or let them leave.
  • Neil Crosby
Bellamy is earning £90K per week and he is deluded if he thinks there is another club who is prepared to match that. Bellamy is under contract to City and they have evry right to omit him from the PL25 and play him in the cup games as [art of a rotaion policy. Why should City help their rivals by loaning him out? It has nothing to do with being afraid it's about exercising a legitamate and legal right.
  • Even Mancini says its better for the players to find another club (quote above in the post)- Man City doesnt want them and they dont want to pay them (though they financially are able to). 99% of the time when it comes to these player tantrums, I would agree with you. The reason why I think this is different is that they are only willing to sell him to a club that a) doesn't threaten them and b) guarantees that Bellamy's career will never take off. It seems malicious and disrespectful to me.

Basically, if clubs and fans are going to demand loyalty and respect from players- they need to give the minimum themselves. I really do believe Bellamy gave 100% of himself to Man City the past year and a half. Maybe he isnt good enough to be in the starting XI or even whole team of 25 this year. I think he has accepted that-but this could virtually end his career. Its like putting an animal down before its necessary-its cruel (even if he is in the penthouse).
  • Neil Crosby
You said it yourself 'he is a big reason why the club was almost able to challenge for a Champions League place last season.'' City and Bellamy failed to hit their target last season. To get us to the next stage -CL football - we need better players and in Mancini's opinion that has been done. If Craig is left out, and to treat him with the respect you say he deserves, then City should allow him to join Cardiff City and help with his wages. Otherwise he is more than capable of upsetting the rest of the dressing room if he hangs around. Failing that there is enough cup football to keep a player, who cannot play more than one game a week, going all season if, as expected, City do well in all competitions.

It would be totally stupid to allow him to join and help a rival. There is no question about that as far as City are concerned.
