March 2007 Club World Rankings

By: Bob | March 2nd, 2007

rankings.jpgHere’s some news to help Sevilla coach Juande Ramos feel better after being knocked out by a bottle thrown from the stands earlier this week. His club is the best in the world. That is true if you believe the latest Club World Rankings released by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics. Rankings of any kind are always good for shits and giggles and the IFFHS’ are no exception.

Sevilla tops the list despite being two points behind Barcelona in the La Liga table heading into the clash between the two teams Saturday. Real are 32. Considering they haven’t won anything the past two years that might be right.

The problem with this ranking system is that awards teams for just playing games, not for who they play or beat for that matter. For instance, Sevilla and Barca both went far in the King’s Cup and European Cups plus their normal schedule. Liverpool had to qualify for the Champion’s League last year which added a significant amount of games to their schedule, plus they made it to the knockout round, plus they won the FA Cup. It’s just not a good system. Unless Liverpool make it to the Champion’s League Final this year, their ranking is going to slide considerably because they lost early in both domestic cups. Here’s where it is really off, Liverpool was eliminated twice by Arsenal in those Cups, while Chelsea advances by playing teams like Macclesfield Town and Luton Town. Chelsea gets awarded for beating lower division teams. It’s just stupid.
