Marco Materazzi Nike Commercial

By: Bob | September 20th, 2006

It is the moment we have all been waiting for. It is Nike’s turn to exploit the head butt that just won’t die. The shoe company has a new commercial out featuring everyone’s favorite villain/hero from the World Cup, Marco Materazzi. With so many fun things that could have been done to play up the Zinedine Zidane head butt, it is a bit disappointing watching what the marketing geniuses came up with in the video below. There’s nary a single mention of Zidane’s sister. The tagline in Italian translates to something along the lines of “Every athlete has his own inner armor.” In Materazzi’s case, that inner armor appears to be where most people’s grey matter resides.

Uh, I hate to say it but that ad kinda, well, falls flat. I’m not using the suck word, but it was a close decision as to whether I would. Not precisely sure why I think it failed, but it didn’t work for this consumer.

Funny ads are a gift in a harsh world (Aflack, I love you!) but that wasn’t a classic to my mind. And it has nothing to do with whether I think the guy is twerpy or not. It’s just lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. Whoops, that’s French isn’t it!?

Oh, and kudos to Chris. Where indeed did they dig up that kit on the lineman? I had a flashback to my parent’s ancient old black and white t.v.! And a flashback to NFL Films of seriously classy awesome players like Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Y. A. Tittle and oh dear I’m getting all teary…

    Yeah, that’s kind of stupid.

I think they fired the guy who put the ad together.

Funny, though, you all know whose was the last goal scored during a World Cup game, right?
