Mario Balotelli: Italy’s Summer 2010 Transfer Saga

It’s not a summer without at least one transfer saga. And in Italy this summer, the transfer news is mostly about Mario Balotelli. Two years ago, Roberto Mancini (now at Manchester City) unleashed a then 17 year old Balotelli onto the scene scoring two goals vs. Juventus in a Coppa Italia game, although I had already read about him months before that as he was dominating Italy’s Primavera league (like the reserves in England, but only U-20 players are allowed to play) at his young age. Unfortunately, even though Balotelli is extremely talented, he also is extremely crazy. He doesn’t have the best personality to put it lightly, and that has impeded his short career so far. If he had the personality of say Roberto Baggio or Alessandro Del Piero for example, he maybe would be Italy’s best player at the moment. Unfortunately he does not.

That’s not to undermine his talent though, because flat out Balotelli is a sublime player. He can be compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He has sublime technique and a rocket of a shot coupled with incredible physical strength, and he has the same “confident” (let’s call it confidence) personality as the Swede. At the age of 19, he has scored more goals in Serie A than players like Francesco Totti, Roberto Baggio, and Alessandro Del Piero scored at his age. Mancini left Inter, in came the strong hand of Mourinho, and even though Mourinho knew Balotelli was a talented player, he didn’t give the talented striker special treatment. Instead, Balotelli with his thick head had his quarrels with Mourinho over the past two seasons and even was frozen out of the squad a couple of times. This strained his relationship with the Milan club, and he hasn’t had the best relationship with the fans.

Italians realize his potential and how strong Balotelli can become, but unfortunately at the moment his head is stopping his progression. He is always in the press and everything he does is closely scrutinized. There is at least one news article a day on Balotelli in the Italian press. And now, this summer, he has become embroiled in the transfer rumors. He seems like he wants to try a new experience and leave Italy. He’s tired of being criticized and scrutinized constantly and wants to start on a new slate. Depending on what you read, it’s really unsure whether Inter want to keep Balotelli. Someone says he has no price, then another person says he can go for 40 million, then another says he’s staying. Who knows anywhere. This will probably last a summer.

Apparently, the English trio of Manchester United (Ferguson apparently wants to transform him into the new Cristiano Ronaldo), Manchester City (with old friend Mancini), and Chelsea (Ancelotti said he would like to coach Balotelli) are interested in his services, with the two Manchester clubs leading the pack. I actually think Manchester City would be the best fit. He has Mancini to help him get acclimated and the English game is good for Balotelli’s playing style (although his diving needs to stop). And most importantly, he’ll have a clean slate. Most of the English press don’t know him, and English fans either know him from youtube, playing Fifa or Football Manager, or a couple of appearances in the Champions League. He won’t be constantly scrutinized or followed (at first at least) and maybe his talent could finally flourish. It will be interesting to see what happens, this is one transfer saga that must be followed.

He is not crazy, he's just a kid. To be 19 and so talented and wealthy is bound to take it's toll on anyone. He's talent is beyond question, what he needs is a coach who will take him under his wing, like a father son relationship. People like him don't respond to harsh treatment and being benched. So as a coach you have a choice, stick to your guns li JM did, punish him and try to teach him a lesson that way. Or actually teach him a lesson on how to be become a man and a functional player on the pitch. Look at the difference between Wayne Rooney 4 years ago and Wayne Rooney now. It's all due to the coaching style of AF. JM was too stubborn to realize that's what he needed and missed out on his talents for the better part of the season. If he's smart, he should try to come to United and benefit from AF's system. Playing inside with WR would be a deadly combination. I can only hope it will happen.

    Peace
  • I think Mario Balotelli will end up signing for Manchester City, with the money they can spend on players and also their wages, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't sign for them.

Yep, English press well known for its restrained attitude towards dealing with football players.
  • Kabir: Fair enough on the appropriate club name correction - I understand that this might be a serious offense, I assure you it was just a case of getting distracted while multi-tasking.

Now, regarding the actual content of what I said regarding Inter- no doubt that part of his attitude is just "part of his nature," but surely you agree that certain conditions can both bring out and diminish those tendencies. As "confident" as Mario might "naturally" be- I doubt the club played no role in his growing ego when he was younger. But, I do agree with you that a lot of this attitude is a way to protect and defend himself when hes feeling attacked. But, again- shouldnt the club do a little bit better of a job protecting him? He clearly doesnt trust the club and I think its stems from more than just not making it in the starting XI. Like I said, hes young- hes struggling to find out who he is in front of millions of people while balancing huge expectations. I dont want to make excuses for him-as he is living a pretty charmed life- but there is still a lot of time for him to meet the expectations of the world...

"Couldn’t have anything to do with the club and coach (Mourinho) espousing that very same attitude, eh?"

No because the club and coach espoused US against the world, which is different.

And Legro deserves to be elbowed at least once a game. He was just getting his due.

The simple fact about Mario is that right now he's an Inter player for the next 4 years making around 1 million per year third/fourth choice behind Eto'o, Milito and is probably even with Pandev.

His agent is trying to either get him a better deal and more playing time at Inter or transfer him to a better deal and more playing time.

If Mario is patient he gets the whole ball of wax at Inter - the playing time and the big payday - as both Eto'o and Milito are right around 30 (Milito just over). If he's not and someone offers what Barca did last season for Ibra... well, that works too.

"Hes young and Milan have to take both credit and blame for the product theyve created in him. If hes arrogant, its because they made him that way"
Ok first of all, it's Inter, because Milan refers to AC Milan (a different club). And second of all, that's not fair to say. If it were really their fault then wouldn't all their players be like that? Everyone has their own particular traits and qualities, you cannot attribute his attitude to the way Inter trained him. Why don't Santon, Zanetti, and others have his attitude?
It's true that's he's immature and a bit foolish, but I believe Balotelli is only like that because he has a "me against the world" mindset - possibly due to his difficult life (racism, adoption) and the excessive criticism from the media.
  • Im someone who is rather sympathetic to players like Balotelli- after-all, my favorite player is Hatem Ben Arfa (the French version of Balotelli, attitude and all- favorite target of the press etc). Hes young and Milan have to take both credit and blame for the product theyve created in him. If hes arrogant, its because they made him that way...the good thing is that he still has a lot of opportunities to change his ways and straighten out his career (at Milan or elsewhere). I just hope he decides to do it rather soon as even with his youth- the career of a footballer is rather short!
  • jor37
he's going to stay, although I wish he doesn't. inter has to be one of my least favorite clubs, haha.
  • matt
he's not coming to united. although I kinda wish he would. we don't have the cash for him. I don't know where he'd play for man city they're probably getting Milner they've got silva. tevez has a spot. maybe he'd play for adebayor some but i think he wants a regular starting spot. he's not really guaranteed that at Chelsea either. I bet he stays
  • italy needs all the help they can get.

Italy cannot let go of their most promising talent. Balotelli is finally matured and next season he should really explode at Inter...
