Mark Hughes Has One Month of Shopping to Save His Job
By: Daryl | January 5th, 2009
We’ve already done one transfer talkM today, but after Man City’s mind-boggling 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Notts Forest on Saturday, we thought we’d do a special one just for Mark Hughes.
FA Cup embarrassment or not, Sparky has the backing of the Abu Dhabi owners (for now) and also has the world’s biggest shopping trolley all revved up and ready to go. And he’s got just under a month to fill it, and fill it wisely. Otherwise it’s surely back to managing clubs like Blackburn for him.
Maybe he’s just that type of manager. The type who can do well on a small budget and exceed low expectations. But if he wants to play amongst the big boys, Hughes has to prove he can do well with a big budget and big expectations.
Hughes has already spent big on Wayne Bridge. At £10m or £12m (opinion seems divided) he’s been ripped off. But in a way that doesn’t matter. Paying £5m too much for a left back is the least of City’s worries if gets them the players needed to turn the season around.
Hughes is also being linked with West Ham’s Scott Parker, in a deal which could work out nicely for all involved. City need a hard working midfielder like Parker and West Ham need silly money to save themselves from financial ruin. If the rumoured big money double offer for Parker and Craig Bellamy arrives then West Ham will surely sell.
Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz is the other name that keeps cropping up. It seems smart of Hughes to focus on established Prem players. City need to turn things around quick, so players who need time to adapt to the Prem probably aren’t good buys right now.
What do you think? Assuming Hughes has the world’s biggest piggy bank who can he realistically sign this month to save his job? Or is it all too late anyway?

Bellamy is mediocre… if he signs him surely his job is doomed.

Michael Ballack, his contract hasn’t been renewed yet and he doesn’t seem happy at Chelsea. He is now available for official offers from other clubs for next season. Offer him a ridiculous paycheck and then offer Chelsea a fee to let him go immediately. Abramovic appears to have been hit hard by the credit crunch, so he’ll probably rather get some money for Ballack rather than having to let him go for free over the summer.
