Matchday 6a: Champions League Lite
By: chris | December 11th, 2007
With Milan screwing up their entire group by winning that damn Champions League (who does that?), only 3 groups are on the docket today. No shortage of excitement though, because of the six knockout spots available from these three groups, only one has been locked up (Chelski - who knew?), and only one has been officially bounced (Valencia - ditto). And those two teams are playing each other. So six games, five with two teams which have everything left to play for. Dreamy. Standings and scenarios after the jump.
Group A
Porto 8
Marseille 7
Liverpool 7
Besiktas 6
Marseille v Liverpool; Porto v Besiktas.
Each team’s scenario:
Porto: Through with a win or a draw, staying home with a loss.
Marseille: Ditto.
Liverpool: Through with a win, finito.
Beskitas: Need a win.
Group B
Chelsea 11
Rosenborg 7
Schalke 5
Valencia 4
Chelsea v Valencia; Schalke v Rosenborg.
Chelsea: Sittin pretty.
Rosenborg: Win or draw and the 5th place Tippeligaen finishers go through.
Schalke: They be needing a win, anything else and it’s CL splitsville.
Valencia: Looking ahead to CL 2008-09.
Group C
Real Madrid 8
Olympiacos 8
Werder Bremen 6
Lazio 5
Real Madrid v Lazio; Olympiacos v Werder Bremen.
Real Madrid: Win or draw sends them through.
Olympiacos: Ditto.
Bremen: Need 3.
Lazio: A win and at least one point from Olimpiacos against WB.

Rafa better hope he gets a result today after he prepared for this game by surrendering to Reading. One thing I’ve always wondered: does someone like Gerrard really benefit from coming off 20 minutes early? Or Carragher from coming off 10 minutes early?
