Midfielder Jan Rosenthal Saves A Penalty

By: The Offside | December 8th, 2008

It’s not often a field player is forced to throw on the keeper gloves. Even rarer that he has to be baptized by penalty. Once in a blue moon when they actually stop it. But midfielder Jan Rosenthal was forced into that position in the 82nd minute of the derby between Wolfsburg and Hannover 96.

Florian Fromlowitz took down Edin Dzeko – who magically fell down about 8 yards away from the actual foul – and received his marching orders. With three subs made, it was a field player forced to take the gloves. So Rosenthal put on Fromlowitz’s jersey and, with a little bit of help from the post and karma, gave Hannover a fighting chance. They still lost 2-1, but Jan deserves his standing O.

Jan – Bundesliga-blogging Jan, not penalty-saving Jan – has more of Dzeko’s exploits, along with his apparent mentor.

Hamburg's Mladen Petric has done the same.

Can people think of other outfield players that have saved penalties after the GK has been sent off? I can't!

  • I remember Javier Farinos used to be a pretty decent keeper for Inter, back in the day. :D

He made a really good save on a free-kick when Toldo got sent off. Couldn't find it online though.

Dzeko and the linesman should be ashamed. Europeans wonder why Americans think this sport is a joke.

  • Red does seem just a bit harsh there.
