Mike Tyson Coming to Leeds United’s Rescue?

It does not seem that long ago that Leeds United were playing Valencia in the Champions League semifinals. That was 2001. Flash forward to 2007 and the once proud club has just been relegated to the third-tier of English football for the first time in its 88-year history. Who could possibly stop Leeds from falling further into obscurity? The one and only answer, of course, is Mike Tyson.

As the battle for future control of Leeds heats up, a Las Vegas fat cat thinks that he has the tonic for the club’s ills. From the Times:

Dominic Marrocco, a Las Vegas-based millionaire, said he was considering a bizarre £10 million survival package that would include installing Mike Tyson as fitness coach and producing an Elland Road reality TV show. “You don’t want to throw good money after bad, but I’ve got the funds and I want to hear ‘We are Leeds’ echoing around the globe,” Marrocco said. “It’s a big club lacking energy.”

Mike Tyson as a fitness coach. That should grab the attention of players’ ears throughout England.

This Marrocco character sounds like a tabloid writer’s wet dream.

Known as The Dom in Vegas circles and described by friends as “one hell of a party guy”, Marrocco has become good friends with Tyson since buying his £2.5 million mansion.

He allowed the former world heavyweight champion to keep some of the fixtures and fittings, including Stevie Wonder’s piano, and even offered Tyson the chance to win back the estate in a televised poker game.

“He comes around and looks after my dogs,” Marrocco said. “I’ve spoken to him about going to Leeds and getting involved. I also think we could have a reality TV show based on the club. Mike’s up for anything.”

A convicted felon who is always a time bomb waiting to explode to the rescue! God I hope this happens.

UPDATE: The club went into administration and then was sold back to Ken Bates so no Tyson…yet. Party poopers.

Ken Bates is a sly old dog, he bought Chelsea for £1 in the early 1980s when they were in trouble and cashed in when he sold it to Abramovich. He'll do the same with Leeds.
