Milan Win Sombre Super Cup
By: Daryl | September 1st, 2007
AC Milan beat Sevilla 3-1 in the European Super Cup in Monte Carlo last night, a sombre game played in the shadow of Antonio Puerta’s tragic death. Though Sevilla lost, there were plenty of touching tributes to their departed teammate from both sets of players and fans. Sevilla fans held banners reading “Puerta presente” (Puerta, you are with us), and “Puerta no te olvidamos” (Puerta, we will not forget you) while Milan fans held an “Onore a Puerta” (glory to Puerta) banner that was presented to Sevilla fans at halftime. Sevilla players all wore black armbands, and had Puerta’s name on the lower half of their shirts, while the coaching staff and substitutes all wore Puerta’s number 16 shirt on the sidelines.
There was a touching moment when Sevilla took the lead through Renato, and the whole team gathered in a huddle and pointed to the heavens. Credit too to AC Milan, who were respectful but never condescending and played to win the Super Cup, which is as it should be. Second half goals from Filippo Inzaghi, Marek Jankulovski and Kaka sealed the win. Match highlights here.
In an age where certain fans and players occasionally give football a bad name with their behaviour, the Super Cup final was an example of just how respectful everyone involved in football is capable of being. As the game marks the start of European proceedings, let’s hope it serves as an example to everyone and we have a trouble free season in the Champions League and UEFA Cup.

Milan players also wore jersey’s with puertas name on the bottom, and dedicated their goals to him. Seedorf removed his shirt and held it up emphisizing puerta as he did so, when he was being subbed out. After scoring a goal Kaka’ pointed to puertas’ name. After winning the cup and carrying it onto the pitch Milan honored puerta again.
but it was a great win, with amazing goals.
R.I.P. Puerta…
