MLS Expansion: It Looks Like Philly

By: Laurie | February 22nd, 2008

phillycheesecake3.jpgWhat name do you like for a Philadelphia MLS team?

Me personally? I’m kind of fond of the “Philadelphia Cheesesteaks.” But that’s just me.

(Think of it. You could have the Emerald City Greens as an appetizer, the Philly Cheesesteaks as your main course, and the New York Red Bulls as your beverage. All we need is for the NE Revolution to change their names to the Boston Cream Pies and we’re in business.)

I should never write posts right before lunchtime.

But this post is about soccer. Specifically the next MLS Expansion Team.

Soccer by Ives and the Philadelphia Enquirer are reporting that it’s all over except for the official announcement, which will take place next week. And the winner is? (You’ll never guess. This is such a surprise!)

PHILADELPHIA!

Seems those tax dollars did the trick. They usually do.

From Ives:

MLS has chosen Philadelphia to become the league’s 16th franchise, sources told SBI on Wednesday night. The announcement is set for next Thursday.

Philadelphia beat out St. Louis for the right to join the league, helped in no small part by the state of Pennsylvania’s decision to approve $47 million in state funding for a proposed $115 million stadium in Chester, Pa.

The Philadelphia team is slated to begin play in 2010.

The official announcement is expected for next Thursday, the 28th.

That’s almost a week. I’m guessing the celebrations have already begun in Philly, but a week should give the Sons of Ben time to sober up.

And then, after it becomes official, they can start celebrating all over again.

Hat tip to Breton at Center Holds It for the links.

    Philly!!!
    YAY!
(And now I’m sad in equal parts that I don’t have a SoB scarf to wave yet and that I’m about 4000 miles away from the nearest good cheesesteak place. Unless anyone knows of one it Italy?)

The Philadelphia Stallions. A subtle nod to the city’s No. 1 hero, Rocky Balboa.

That picture doesn’t look gross chris. It’s one of those, “you had to be there” moments.

“It’s one of those, “you had to be there” moments.”

Exactly, it looks like a moment that has already passed, not one that’s about to occur.

Friends, what you’re looking at is the “wiz-wit”. A cheesesteak from Pat’s, that has cheese-WIZ and WITH onions, thus, wiz-wit.

Great decision for the MLS to expand in Philly! I just hope they don’t use the city colors of powder blue and yellow for the jerseys! I vote for black with either eagles green or flyers orange.

finally! can’t say i like the tax funded stadium though. can’t see it doing anything for chester but i suppose when you’re at the bottom the only way to go is up(can you move sideways?).
as for colors, i like the black but with the city flag colors. have you seen the SoB scarves? they’re nice and i think it would look good.
f*ck pat’s, geno’s, and jim’s. just go to the corner shop and as a lifelong philadelphian who grew up on cheesesteaks(no seriously my dad eats them about once a day) i hafta say cheese-wiz sucks. don’t buy the tourist hype.

My Philly-native boyfriend would like to register his agreement that Cheez Whiz has no business on a cheesesteak.

Personally, I’d like to see the history of the Bethlehem Steel, one of the winningest sides in US Open Cup history, incorporated into the name. Unfortunately, that’d confuse all the Pittsburgh Steeler fans in the state so Philadelphia Steel is probably out…

I actually really like this. As a Metro (redbull) supporter, it gives us another rival within a close distance.

How is the soccer community in that area?
