MLS Fans, We Have an All-Star Team

By: Laurie | July 10th, 2008

MLS fans, it’s time! Time to start thinking about the July 24 MLS All-Star game, where we can once again prove that our best-of-the-best can beat an off-season, mid-table European squad. After which we can say, for another year, “See? We can compete with Europe!”

Unless we lose, in which case we’ll say, “Umm… It’s hot. We’ve played a hard half-a-season. We’re tired. Some of our best players are injured. We’re playing in freakin’ Toronto, which is a long way from home! And West Ham was really playing out of their minds for this game, weren’t they? They are so underrated!”

Last week we got the names of the top vote-getters from the fan vote, which counted for 25% of team selection. Today we get the rest of the story — the team we get when we combine the fan vote with votes from managers, coaches, players and the press.

The really interesting part? In the reader vote, there were six Toronto players in the top fifteen.

In the First XI, though? None.

Toronto fans, I know I’ve poked some fun in the past, but I am offended on your behalf — particularly since the game is being played in your stadium. It’s as if MLS is saying, “TFC? We don’t like your players and don’t value your votes, but come to the stadium and spend lots of money anyway, okay?”

Here’s the official list of your All-Star First XI, in that ever-popular 3-5-2 formation. MLSnet points out that “First XI” does not necessarily mean “Starting XI.” “First XI” being a reflection of votes received, and not necessarily which players will perform best together. The decision on which players will actually take the field on July 24 will be up to coach Steve Nicol.

(And somebody please remind Cuauhtemoc Blanco he needs to check the jersey color before he starts head-butting and eye-gouging. Guys like David Beckham and Landon Donovan are now his teammates.)

2008 MLS All-Star First XI
Goalkeeper: Matt Reis (New England Revolution)

Defenders: Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution)

Midfielders: David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

Forwards: Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)

In response to Mark, i wouldn't get too excited about beating any team in a pre-season game. They are virtually meaningless. They only thing they achieve is building up match fitness ready for the new season.
    The MLS CANNOT compete...

to see if they can beat an off-season, mid-table european squad?

try chelsea 1-0, and celtic 2-0, who were defending scottish champions at the time. And "off-season" could translate to "well rested."

    the MLS CAN compete...
  • I'm glad Sacha's on the list. I bet he's gonna use the Olympics to parlay a sweet European contract. Uh, that girl booked to sing at halftime is alright. I like her single with Kanye. I think that's about it.

It only counts for 25% of the vote total sam, so obviously not many players/managers/media types were mega voting for Toronto players. I'm not sure who exactly from Toronto I'd put on their. Sutton over Reis would be a joke, none of their defenders have been wow, defensive midfielders have to compete with all midfielders and Edu isn't as good as Joseph, Guevara fails at least the managers section miseerably on past behavior and none of the strikers stands out (I haven't watched much TFC but do you even have a consistent front line?).

That being said typically the coach picks 5 more and than garber picks 2 more and at least one of those will be pandering to the home town crowd. And than all players who drop out due to injury (Angel) or arrest will give Nichol another spot to fill.
  • I haven't watched too many Crew games this year, but I did catch the one last weekend. Now, I like Frankie HeyDude, I like watching him play and he's a good personality to have on a squad. I am a HeyDude fan. But: during last weekend's game with the Fire, Frankie was PURE COMEDY on defense.

Like I said I have seen less than 2 Crew games this season, but if that was any indication, the MLS all-star game is just like any others: a popularity contest surrounding a fun event that includes a meaningless game.

That said, it'd be fun to attend. Please pardon my rambling.

Oh okay, this is how important fan voting is? Seriously, what the fuck.
