I think "all wrong" might be a stretch. I didn't mean to imply that the deal was explicitly forced. By all accounts they came to terms without overt outside intervention.

What I saw, though, just watching as a fan, was that things seemed to be at a stalemate until The Don made some growling noises. Then suddenly it's all smiles and roses and a deal has been struck. I don't think we'll ever know what role the commissioner actually played, or whether a deal would have gotten done if he hadn't expressed his concern.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it's certainly in MLS's best interest for them to have everybody believe that the teams came to terms without any outside intervention. Because otherwise it would bring into focus the ridiculous situation that caused McBride's rights to be owned by Toronto in the first place.

Your part about the McBride trade is wrong. It has been reported by people who cover MLS all the time (Ives, Goff, Bueno) that the commissioner didn't force this deal. FC Toronto's striker situation is in dire straights (Dykio out with concussions other guy banished to reserve team) and they could really use a decent mls strike in Barret plus a first plus some more of Barret doesn't resign with MLS. It's a good deal for both teams.
