MLS Represent: Team Anthems, Oh Yeah

By: Bob | August 16th, 2007

rjd2-grp3-0604.jpgOf all the shortcomings of MLS, I’ve always thought that the biggest has been the absence of official team anthems. Well that and the absence of attractive female referees who pose naked for Playboy, but the league office refuses to take my phone calls about that. MLS and its corporate minders have gone about correcting the anthem wrong through something they are calling MLS Represent, which basically entails bands that I’ve never heard of singing anthems I wish I could forget I heard. Not to sound like an old fart, but I miss the days of real music and real music videos.

Here’s a list of the various teams and their new anthems. Twenty years ago when these are a mainstay at MLS stadiums I’m sure you’ll remember the first time you heard about The Mighty R-E-A-L

Chivas USA
Chivas Explosivas – Akwid

New York Red Bulls
Whoo! Alright, Yeah…Uh Huh – The Rapture

Real Salt Lake
The Mighty R-E-A-L – Meg and Dia

Colorado Rapids
Goal! – Rose Hill Drive

Houston Dynamo
Houston Dynamo (Don’t Play) – Mike Jones

FC Dallas
H-O-O-P-S Yes! – The Polyphonic Spree

LA Galaxy
We are the Galaxy – Kinky

Kansas City Wizards
Ain’t Nobody Gonna Stop Us Now – Blackpool Lights

Chicago Fire
Here Comes the Fire – OK GO

Columbus Crew
It’s Your Crew – RJD2

Toronto FC
TFC – Barenaked Ladies

DC United
D.C. United – Bad Brains

New England Revolution
Revolution – Damone

You can hear them in all their glory here.

“bands that I’ve never heard of,” are you serious? Bad Brains, RJD2, OK Go…surely you’re mistaken? Or do you fancy yourself a Michael Bolton, Christopher Cross kind of guy?

If Michael Bolton sung their anthem the Tampa Bay Rowdies would still be around.

Why don’t the Revs get Deuce to do their song?

I love that Rapture song, but that’s one weird choice for a sports anthem .. OK, wait, a quick search shows that they changed the lyrics for soccer-related purposes. Never mind.

And I’m so thrilled that a DC sports team has recognized the Bad Brains that I will refrain from any further snarkiness.

Deuce should’ve teamed up with Mike Jones to make the Dynamo’s track even slicker.

Barenaked Ladies sure mailed it in on this one. Sooooo soooo lame.

Honestly I’d say Blackpool Lights got it best – the lyric-less chanting makes for a song that could actually be chanted by an entire stadium of American sports fans. I’d say the same of the RJD2 song, but the line about “the Buckeyes ain’t the only game in town” just made me feel bad for Ohio.

OK Go did a nice, not-too-cheesy job. If I didn’t hate the Dynamo I might play Mike Jones’ track at my parties. The Revs’ song… about as offbeat and whiny as their performance in Colorado tonight.
