MLS Thursday Night: Chivas USA v DC United
By: Bob | September 6th, 2007
After a week off to allow us all to focus on the SuperLiga final and to recover from our David Beckham-injury funk, MLS is back at it with its Thursday night game of the week. This week’s contest is one that does not suck, at least it doesn’t suck on paper. Red hot DC United takes on Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in a game that presumably won’t disrupt the lives of college students.
After starting the season playing like a team that was destined to disappoint, DC United have righted the ship and are now atop the Eastern Conference table. They are riding a six-game league winning streak that has seen them concede just one goal in 540 minutes. They have Luciano Emilio whose 14 goals tie him with Juan Pablo Angel and Eddie Johnson for the league lead.
Their opposition this evening is a Chivas USA side that is in second place in the Western Conference. They have won four of their past five games and they have a goalkeeper in Brad Guzan who is second in the league in goals against average. They are also the only MLS team that is unbeaten at home.
In a week where most leagues are playing second fiddle to international soccer, MLS rolls on. Here are a few things to keep an eye on while you watch what should be a more than decent game.
1. The Beard – It seems like just yesterday that Ben Olsen made his MLS debut and earned Rookie of the Year honors, but in fact yesterday was all the way back in 1998. I’m getting fucking old. Olsen is also starting to age but he is putting in another fine year. His seven goals are a career high and he is coming off a two-goal performance against FC Dallas that earned him Player of the Week honors.
2. Paulo from Sao Paulo – How many MLS players can say that they grew up playing on the youth team of one of Brazil’s top clubs, helped lead Arsenal’s U-19 team to a championship and won an MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy? I’m wagering that Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura is the only way who can say that.
3. Injured but not forgotten – Even when the guy doesn’t play for your team, he still works his way into the storyline. Let’s see how ESPN approaches the injury during its broadcast.
Go ahead and take your Eric Wynalda vaccine and enjoy the game.

When the HDC was sited in Carson way back, most of us north-side locals knew it was a bad idea. But what’s his face who built it (Anschutz or whomever) said, oh no, don’t worry, there’ll be a “world class parking structure,” whatever the hell that means. But whaddya expect from a dude who probably never had to drive the 405 southbound before in his life (preferring helos and special motorcades). The other promise was that Metro (then MTA) would deliver fans without a fuss directly to the HDC doors from “everywhere across the region.” Guess they forgot about that when they failed to make any Metro lines that run to HDC from the railways and decided to stop the busses from running in Carson @ 10 pm. Now it’s the college parking division’s turf. Sheesh…. the Rose Bowl was never a hassle though it sucked as a futbol-specific stadium.
But there’s always teevee, right? Not in ‘Merkuh… we have ESPN, Extra-Stoopid-Productions-Division who can’t figure out futbol from pointy-ball and where poker trumps futbol and NASCAR trumps all. And the best commentator they can get is the likes of Wynalda-the-chimp… “oh there’s a foul…. now, that’s a foul…. when you foul like that… oh there’s a foul… yup, that’s a foul…” What is MLS thinking?
