MLS Thursday Night: Columbus v New England

tommy-smyth.jpgLast week I threw my support behind the notion of a national MLS game of the week on Thursday evenings and I enjoyed the heck out of the match. Just when I thought ESPN had a good thing going here, they go ahead and add Tommy Smyth into the commentary booth. Ugh. Interesting credentials, he has. Nevertheless, we shall forge on and do our part to hype tonight’s match and to build a new tradition in American sports. If nothing else, you can make it into a drinking game. Every time Smyth says something stupid, make your enemy drink.

You might need to do some drinking to add to the excitement this week, but let’s hope not. The Columbus Crew, a team that has opened its 2007 MLS campaign with two 0-0 draws take on a New England Revolution side that lost its opener to Chicago 1-0 and then spanked Toronto FC 4-0 at home.

Three things to watch for as you plug your ears during the telecast:

1. Will the Crew ever score? – Based on what I saw the first couple of games the Crew couldn’t score in a Texas whorehouse. The names Jason Garey, Andy Herron and Joseph Ngwenya hardly strike fear in one’s heart but they are the forwards tasked with finding the net. You can cast a vote for when or if that will actually happen. Conversely, the guy in goal for the Crew, Andy Gruenebaum, is starting in net for the first year and hasn’t given up a goal yet.

2. Will Shalrie Joseph fight his own teammates? – To say that the midfielder is unhappy with the way the Revolution have treated him is an understatement. The Revs reportedly turned down a $1 million transfer bid for him from Celtic last year and the squawked when he asked for more money this year. Then he asked to be traded. He was not. He is a heck of a player but how hard will he fight for the team tonight and this season? He did score last week despite being hampered by a leg injury. Hopefully he’ll fight better than he did in a bar.

3. The Crewzers – Midwestern cheerleaders. Enough said.

Enjoy the game. Feel free to use this space for comments before, during and after the game. Also check out the Crew and Revs Offside blogs for Tommy Smyth-free analysis.

Call me crazy but I like Smyth. I don't understand why ppl hate on him so much. Sure he says stupid things but most of the stuff he says puts a smile on my face. He might not be as knowledgeable as Derek Rae or another announcers but he is a recognizable voice and 100000X better than the American guy who usually does baseball.

I just wanted to take a second and say that ESPN really has put together two solid weeks of good soccer broadcasting. It has already become a tradition with my friends here...now the product has to follow the production. Insert "When Beckham gets here quote..."
  • Honk! Nice one, Nick.

Didn't Tommy start out in "the business" by paying for airtime in New York to talk about football/soccer before joining ESPN? For the Tommy haters out there, I give you http://www.ecbafc.com/pages/sm...

    GOOOALLLL TIE GAMEA EFAewjw3 rijw2rawrr#@ r#@r#

I thought I had been watching this game on the Pause/Play mode until now (you know, the one where you pause the show, then click pause again so it goes forward a couple frames, then click pause again to go forward yet another couple frames - now do that 25,000 times and that's what this game has been like).
  • I really like Little Neddie Grabvoy. When I saw him play in person during his collegiate career, it was clear he had a certain talent. usually smooth on the ball and a great passer. Nearly a Cesc-light.

    Nearly.
  • Looks like it's fancy dress night in Columbus and the most popular costume seems to be empty seat (ba ra bam bam).

Twellman is such a capable MLS player goal scorer. I just wish he would do it for USMNT.
  • It's a good thing we didn't have a drinking game going last week for the following phrases:

    1) "When Beckham gets here..." OR the various versions of:
    2) "Landon's gotta do better than that!"

Otherwise I would be dead of alcohol poisoning.

I actually think the announcing crew is doing a decent job tonight (and wow, that Herron elbow was outrageous).
  • Despite the empty seats...I think this is the first MLS season ever (inluding the first season!) where I've been genuinely excited about it. Not bad.
  • Tom
Well, at least it's a goalfest! Even if the goals haven't been the best.
  • Bob
A pity there aren't more people there. The Crew have a nice little stadium. I think that is the biggest risk of the Thursday night games, especially when school is still in session.

Wow, I haven't seen soccer in widescreen HD since the World Cup. It looks gorgeous. Shame the stands look empty...
  • Bob
I am shocked Tommy Smyth didn't win a sports emmy for that. Sadly, we can only re-live the moment in Japanese.
  • Peter
Twellman will score and rip off his shirt and get his second yellow card of the game.
  • Sam
2-1 New England. Crew will score an ugly-ass goal.
