MLS Thursday Night: New England Revolution v Kansas City Wizards

By: Bob | August 2nd, 2007

khano-smith-celebrates.jpgAs a public service announcement to those of you who bought tickets to the Thursday night contest between the New England Revolution it is our duty to inform you that Joe Franchino will not be playing. He is out with an injury. Injuries happen in sports. Before you go clamoring about getting a refund for your tickets, you should know that the league doesn’t do that. Not even for that Beckham character.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way we can talk about the MLS Thursday Night game that dozens of us will watch tonight on ESPN2. This week’s contest should be more fun that a swift kick in the ass, and believe me I know how much you enjoy a swift kick in the ass.

On one side of the field are the New England Revolution. They are in first place in the Eastern Standings and are undefeated in their past four games. On the other side of the field are the Kansas City Wizards who are also undefeated in their past four games. They are in second place in the Eastern Standings, a mere one point behind the Revolution. First versus second. Not even ESPN can screw that up.

Here are a few things to keep an eye on while you sit in the lounge chair drinking a tall boy.

1. He kicks poo – Letter for letter Jack Jewsbury has one of the best name in MLS. The Wizards defender ain’t too bad on the pitch either. He has started every game for the team from Oz, which is almost as impressive as the fact that he attended the same high school as Brad Pitt. That is Kickapoo High School in Springfield, MO for those scoring at home.

2. No he Khano – He might be having a fine season for the Revolution but midfielder Khano Smith shall be forever remembered as the guy who made taking a free kick look exceptionally difficult. If he pulls another one like this off on Thursday night he might kill the ESPN sideline reporter. Not that that would be a bad thing.

3. 4 Real – The last time Eddie Johnson played against the Revolution he scored a hat trick. Like him or hate him, he life story makes it difficult not to root for him.

4. Outfoxed – Both teams play in stadiums better suited for American football. The Revolution might finally be saying goodbye to Foxboro. Feel free to shed a tear….of joy.

Here’s hoping the game is a good one and that your beverages do not run out.

He’ll be there in spirit, Tom. And he’ll probably get a mention or two from the broadcast team.

If I decide to go to the pub tonight, it’ll be to catch the last half hour or so, since like most people I work until 5.

I think it would be helpful for the success of this primetime MLS experiment (which I have been enjoying very much), if ESPN would follow the example of their own Monday Night (NFL) Football broadcast, and show all the games no earlier than 9pm eastern time.

East-coasters will complain that it’s too late, but west-coasters will actually be able to get out of work and watch the match. Wouldn’t this make even more sense to an MLS or TV exec if, say, the LA Beckhams are playing a Thursday game in New York or DC…?

    “Is Beckham playing?”

That is probably the funniest three-word sentence I’ve read in my life.

I’d like to punch Tommy Smyth right in the ol’ onion bag.

As a first time watcher of the Revs since the inaugural season of MLS, even though I’m from Boston, I decided to wiki the roster and find out who plays for them. From Jeff Larentowicz:

“I know most people enjoy traveling through Europe and other fancy-type places but I’ll take the elegance and grandeur of the North Shore over any of those unsophisticated and over-hyped destinations any day.”

What I want to know is if this guy has ever actually been to the North Shore? If he had he’d know there would be no grandeur or elegance. Basically a bunch of high-haired women yelling out “Bruins ah wicked good.” And Europe is unsophisticated? Funny, I didn’t get that memo.

Good point, Chris. Got any other totally spontaneous rants about statements made by goggle-wearing MLS players? I’d love to hear them.
