MLS Transfer Talk
By: Laurie | December 19th, 2007
Why should the Europeans get all the fun? It’s the MLS silly season too, so here are a load of essentially unsubstantiated transfer rumors:
Polish striker Maciej Zurawski showed up in all the papers as being linked to the LA Galaxy, at least until GM Alexi Lalas said, “Maciej who?” Going back to check sources, we find that all news reports trace back to…let’s see… Ah. Zurawski’s agent, who might perhaps just be looking to get his client’s name in the news? Don’t expect to see Celtic’s “Magic” here any time soon.
And what was the deal on the Juan Sebastian Veron to DC rumor, widely reported in all the media but now proved false? Great story here. Seems that the story was first reported on the blog MLSRumors, a site even more dedicated to lack of substantiation than myself. From there it was picked up by an Italian site, and from that Italian site it went to Sports illustrated and the AP. Gotta love it. (Of course, this story is also coming from MLSRumors, so judge it accordingly and don’t blame us if it’s not true.) Or you can believe the alternate version. Your pick.
Last week there was a rumored three-way trade in the works. Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon would take his large salary and go to DC United. Bobby Boswell (or, according to one rumor, Christian Gomez) would head from DC to Dallas. And Carlos Ruiz, el Pescadito, the little flopping fish, would head to LA, presumably carting his large salary along with him. This obviously didn’t happen. The original rumor about the trade’s demise was that MLS had finally decided to play hardball with the Galaxy and would not allow three over-cap players (Beckham, Donovan and Ruiz) on one team. MLS says that’s not the case. (But you knew that when you saw “MLS” and “hardball with the Galaxy” in the same sentence, right?) So apparently the real story is that the parties just couldn’t come to terms.
But that didn’t keep Bobby Boswell from heading out the door at DC. He’s now enjoying life in a cowboy hat at Houston, in exchange for goalkeeper Zach Wells. (Ian Plenderleith offered up some thoughts on Brand Boswell and the transfer. I’m not sure I agree. What do you think?)
And for those who are wondering why DC was making eyes at another goalkeeper, Troy Perkins has been linked to a deal with Norwegian club Valerenga. Yanks Abroad says a deal is near, and Troy’s agent says they have an “agreement in principle.” Whatever that means.
The Carlos Ruiz to Galaxy rumors are still popping up, too. (Galaxy fan says NOOOOOOOOOO! HATE Ruiz. The whining, diving crybaby.)
Real Salt Lake striker Alecko Eskandarian has been on trial at Standard Liege in Belgium. It started as a one-week thing but duNord says it’s been extended. DuNord is never wrong on these things (the man is a footy info god), so I’m guessing it’s true. But it’s under the radar, because I’m not finding other sources at the moment. (If you have one, leave it in the comments. Thanks!)
And last but not least, let’s start a rumor of our own! According to some sources, Milan is getting tired of Ronaldo’s high cost + low performance, so he may be headed out the door. (That’s the glandular Brazilian Ronaldo, not the pretty Portuguese.) Who would take him? Well, let’s see. He’s rich, famous, and past his sell-by date. Sounds like Galaxy material to me!
This is far from all the current rumors, but it’s all I have time for today. But don’t worry, folks, we have months to cover them all, so keep checking back.

What about players transferring OUT of MLS? Is Michael Parkhurst still headed to Fulham? What about Brad Guzan and Jozy Altidore?

Okay, see, what happened was? I was on a 1:00 deadline. It was 12:46. And my mom called to talk about Christmas presents. Twice. Post goes up as is. It was getting long anyway.
Version 2.0 will feature both incoming (such as US players in Europe who are talking about coming back) and outgoing. Last I heard, Jozy was still being noncommittal, but I’m thinking he won’t leave this year. Everything Osorio is saying about plans implies that Jozy will be around next year. Guzan I wouldn’t be surprised to see leave. Arsenal would be interesting, but would be a HUGE leap. I’d think something more interim. Parkhurst I’m not sure.
Now that you’ve asked about them specifically, I’ll be sure to report what I find next time around.

It appears Zurawski may still be coming to MLS – just not LA. The likely (logical) location would be Chicago who would fill their stadium to the brim with a Zurawski/Blanco (Polish/Mexican) tandem.
I don’t understand MLS salary rules, but it seems there are always ways to get around them if that need be the case in Chicago…

Joe, do you have a link for that? This would make me happy. When the Galaxy rumors were hot and heavy, I started feeling all kinds of sympathy for him as he’s trying to get ready for Euros without seeing playing time at Celtic. I’d like to see him somewhere happy and playing.

Yes, unfortunately [for most of your readers] the link is in Polish.
http://www.sport.pl/pilka/1,65046,4779508.html
However, the gist is that
A) The LA rumors were started by Zurawski’s agent–who isn’t in fact his agent but merely a friend (and who has been known in the past to speak about players who had contracts with other agents)
B) His REAL agent, when interviewed by this media outlet (which is reliable when it does its own reports, as is the case here), stated that Zurawski has four offers. He wouldn’t specify where they are from, but when asked specifically if one of them was from MLS, he didn’t rule it out. He also said that Zurawski was likely to in fact leave in the January transfer window.
The Polish paper then points out that LA is an unlikely destination, referring to Lalas’s recent denials.
Finally, the paper mentions two of the other clubs that Zurawski’s been linked with – Anderlecht (Belgium) and Nurmberg (Bundesliga).
It’s also worth pointing out that the same outlet had an interview a few days ago with Poland’s national team coach who stated that he’s talked with Zurawski about a potential move to the U.S. (stating it wouldn’t prevent him from being selected from the team). So, it seems that his links with MLS aren’t just hot air…

Oh, and Guzan to Arsenal???? NO WAY. I bet my life on it.

Thanks, Joe. The interview with the Poland coach about Zurawski needing to play had made the English-language papers, and I’d heard about the agent/non-agent thing, but the four offers are news to me.
And I’d agree with you about Guzan and Arsenal, but that is the rumor in the news. I somehow can’t see him replacing Mad Jens, though.

As a Celtic fan, I will personally pay for Zurawski’s flight to the US.

I know Ronaldo has a lot of injuries as of late, but I still think he will tear up the league like no other striker in the history of MLS if he came here. He scored every other game last year for AC Milan and there are many teams that would take the risk because he is still a very talented strike. Ruud just said he was the best striker ever. So is he injure yes but past his prime….maybe a little but still better than Pavon, Buddle, and Gordon put together and then much more
