Juan Pablo Angel is not the original DP. He was at least the third DP announced (after Reyna and Beckham and maybe Blanco I couldn't say) and the second DP to play a game (after his teammate Reyna). In fact out of the candidates despite the Beckham injuries Reyna may just have the edge in the dissapointing DP sweepstakes. The original DP just isn't working.

That is of course unless you go into history and look at the early players who the league bent the salary rules for in their calvinball games. Etchverry and Valderrama among them (I think Donaldoni too), so the term 'original DP' really matters whether you count some of the pre-DP rule DPs.

Juan Carlos, DP is Designated Player -- the player who is allowed to be paid outside the MLS salary cap. Currently the salary cap in MLS is $2.4 million, but only the first $400,000 of a DP's salary counts towards that, leaving the team to pick up the rest. This is a new rule in 2007.

Beckham is the most famous signing, but Blanco for Chicago and Juan Pablo Angel are also pretty big names and there are several others as well.

David Beckham was injured while playing the team which is rated as 23rd in the entire world. The L.A. Galaxy beat Pachuca during the 1st round without Beckham and nearly beat them in the final without Beckham for the majority of the game.

Injuries are a part of sports. People want to see Beckham - if he simply goes to the remaining games and greets fans then I think we as (as fans) will be able to get our money's worth. MLS is an exciting league which has been underated by the U.S. press and the World press.
