Modest Marcello Lippi Eyes Chelsea Job
By: Bob | February 1st, 2007There used to be an unwritten protocol for managers in football where they didn’t publicly fawn over a coaching position until it was actually open. The same thing applies in many workplaces. I’ve been longing for my boss Sean’s position for months but I would never publicly say that. World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi has no need for such protocol, however. He knows his shit smells good and he knows that he is the right man to replace Jose Mourinho at Chelsea even though Mourinho is still managing the team.
Said the always humble Lippi:
“I’m aware that I’m on the wanted list at a number of big clubs but specifically Chelsea and I regard that as only natural,” said Lippi. “If anyone is surprised about top clubs like Chelsea wanting me then I just point to my record.
“I have coached teams which have reached the Champions League final four times, I’ve won Serie A five times and the World Cup. If anyone thinks that a move to a big English club is beyond me then I’d just say ‘give me a break’.
“It feels wholly understandable after a year out and given my CV that a big club wants to sign me and I will make my final decision in May.”
The excellent news is that Lippi is evidently taking English language classes so when he does replace Mourinho we will still be treated to arrogant accented quotes in English on a weekly basis.
For the record, Chelsea have denied having a Mourinho replacement list.

That picture is appropriate. I think Lippi is just blowing smoke.

I’m sorry, when you said “Mourinho” I totally lost focus. What’s going on again?

Ah, see this makes a lot more sense of the “Cannavaro to Chelsea” rumors. I couldn’t understand why the British press though Mancini would encourage that transfer.
That being said, I don’t think either will happen.
