More Last Minute La Liga Action

By: Daryl | June 9th, 2007

Wondering what happened in today’s La Liga title battle? More drama that’s what. You should all know by know – and shame on you if you don’t – but Real Madrid and Barcelona started the day level on points with Madrid top thanks to their better head to head record. Sevilla sat two points behind in third place.

You can see all the action unfold simultaneously above (narrated by Ray Hudson’s brilliantly mad rantings – “he split the defence like a banana,” etc) but basically Madrid were losing away to Zaragoza and Barca winning at home to Espanyol with just five minutes to go, two scorelines which would have seen Barca steal top spot. But then…

Raul Tamudo snatched an 87th equalizer for Espanyol at the Nou Camp/Camp Nou, then Ruud van Nistelrooy scored an 89th equalizer for Madrid in Zaragoza. Sevilla missed their chance to join in the three way top of the table action, as they could only muster a goalless draw against Real Mallorca.

So, we go into the final round of matches next week with Madrid just needing a win at home to Mallorca to clinch a first title since David Beckham became a galactico, and the way things have gone for old Goldenballs lately, you’d be crazy to bet against him.

I have to say, I’m no Madrid supporter, but for some reason I’ve been pulling for them here. Its a shame Sevilla couldn’t snatch a goal, or this would have been incredible dram a going into the final weekend. Blame the international calendar…
