More “Mind Games” from Domenech
By: Inara | September 10th, 2007
Raymond Domenech isn’t making any friends this week.
Not only did he accuse Italy of cheating (and subsequently getting a touchline ban from UEFA), but now he’s ruffled a few feathers in the Scottish camp as well.
During a press conference, in which he complained about the Rugby World Cup and how it damaged the pitch on which the France-Scotland match will take place, he ended by claiming that the Scots are the favorites to advance in Group B.
You would think that would be a compliment, but it isn’t wise to take anything Domenech says at face value (before the Italy-France match, he singled out Materrazzi for praise), and what’s more, Scotland know it too.
Says Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher:
I’ve heard a lot of quotes coming from the French camp but to say Scotland are favourites for the group is just ludicrous. In a group with France, Italy and Ukraine, how can anybody, even at this stage, turn around and say Scotland are the favourites? We know it’s mind games. France are by far the favourites for the group and by far the favourites for the game. In this group we are very much the underdogs and even though we have got ourselves in to a reasonable position, we haven’t achieved anything yet.
Many of you will recall France’s unexpected defeat in Glasgow last October, a defeat which Domenech partially attributed to the slowness of Scotland’s ball boys. Fortunately, Scotland were so euphoric at taking three points from France that they hardly paid it attention.
I’m sure that this time, Domenech will brief the French ball boys himself.

“France are by far the favourites for the group…”
So who’s dumber, Ray Ray or Fletcher? I say push. That’s just a ridiculous statement.

Actually I think Fletcher and Domenech are both right. France look most likely to qualify in the group, and if they do well against Scotland, they’ll probably get top spot. And I fancy Scotland above the likes of Italy and Ukraine. They’ve been doing really well this year while Italy only look like a shadow of their world cup selves.
